The Raid was certainly one of the standout action movies of recent years. The fact the Indonesian movie managed to crack the English-speaking market with little difficulty just reiterates how impressive Gareth Evan's tower-block busting martial arts fest was.
In my opinion, it also means the English language remake of the movie is relatively redundant. However, I don't make the decisions in Hollywood (yet), so once again a successful foreign language film is getting the ol' Stars and Stripes makeover.
Today, TheWrap is reporting that The Expendables 3 helmer, Patrick Hughes, has been selected to direct the project. Furthermore, although casting has yet to begin, Liam, Chris and Luke Hemsworth (I didn't even know there was a third one) have apparently all been mentioned as possible stars.
The original Raid followed an elite Indonesian SWAT team who assault a tower block owned by a deadly and violent gangster. However, one young cop also has his own side-mission - to save his drug dealing brother who is also trapped in the building.
Of course, the choice of Hughes seems like a no-brainer. The Expendables series is obviously another high-octane action franchise. Having said that, The Raid did have a slightly more gritty and serious tone than The Expendables movies. Let's hope Hughes can also pull that off.
Luckily, Gareth Evans will also be on hand as a producer for the project. He's currently busy putting the final touches to The Raid 2, which is due in theaters in March.
What do you think? Is this really a movie that needs an English language remake? Let us know below.
