Over the course of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there have been many Marvel villains that were some of the nastiest, most evil characters I have ever seen. And today, I will give my Top 10 of the villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I rank these types of characters from the least to the best. I will also do a Top 10 Heroes list in the near future.

10. Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace; [Guardians of the Galaxy](movie:424073))

At #10, this Marvel villain who qualifies as being the puppet villain for the bigger bad. And that is Ronan the Accuser. He is a mastermind who is on a quest for his master Thanos to seek the Orb, which is one of the six Infinity Stones. Now this villain is very interesting because he tours himself of the cosmos with his people, the Kree as their leader. And Lee Pace was an interesting choice because he portrayed an Elvish king in The Hobbit trilogy. What better way to bring Pace's role from good guy to bad guy with a villain that seeks to destroy the entire universe (with only the Guardians in his way).

9. Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce; Iron Man 3)

Coming at the #9 spot is a villain who started out as a fan of the hero. And the #9 goes to Aldrich Killian. Drawing inspiration from the Iron Man comic story Extremis, Killian was a scientist who was looking to improve his experiments with the Extremis formula through his private think tank Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM). He is also the puppet master of the so-called Mandarin (played by Ben Kingsley) who turned out to be none other than an average British actor. What's interesting about this Marvel baddie is that he is the first of the Marvel Cinematic Universe villains to be a hidden villain to try and trick his enemy (Tony Stark) into going after someone else. He also has the ability to breathe fire at his enemies.

8. Arnim Zola (Toby Jones; Captain America; Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

At #8, this villain was able to stay alive throughout the majority of time gone by. And that one villain is Dr. Arnim Zola. Now this Marvel villain was a scientist for HYDRA who worked for Red Skull in the first Captain America movie. We saw him in that film in his physical body form before he turned himself into a computer. Fast forward to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we find Zola to have survived his death due to a special treatment for his computerized form. I thought him to be a bit of a surprise when I first saw Winter Soldier, because he was the one who wrote the algorithm that was to go with HYDRA's scheme to launch Project Insight. Now Project Insight was supposed to be a project for protection. But as the film progressed, it was revealed to be a project for destruction. And one of the masterminds behind it was Arnim Zola himself.

7. The Abomination (Tim Roth; The Incredible Hulk)

With #7, I had to think of a villain to match its hero. And the Hulk came to mind. His evil twin? The Abomination. This guy is the exact opposite of the Hulk. Especially with bones coming out of his back. He can easily take down the Hulk in a mere few seconds. Now this version for the Abomination started out as Emil Blonsky, who worked as a soldier for General Ross' team who were working to capture Bruce Banner for his Hulk transformation. But Blonsky had other intentions. He wanted to take down Banner. But he also wanted to transform into something far more powerful than what Banner can transform into. Not green. But an evil twin of the Hulk with bones coming out of his back.

6. Brock Rumlow (Frank Grillo; Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

Coming in at #6, this villain had a good trait as he started out. And that one villain is Brock Rumlow. In the comics, he is also known as Crossbones, who is a mercenary working for Red Skull (and being responsible for the death of Captain America). In Captain America: The Winter Soldier however, he starts out being an agent for SHIELD leading the elite STRIKE unit, who ventures through Cap's various missions. But as the film progressed, we found out that he worked for HYDRA, led by Alexander Pierce in this film. Now he is another henchman villain on this list. I thought of him being the main antagonist of such film. But I found out that he was to be a henchman to the bigger villain alongside the Winter Soldier. But still, Rumlow qualifies for being a villain with a sneaky personality unknown to Captain America while leading his own team of SHIELD agents.

5. Malekith The Accursed (Christopher Eccleston; [Thor: The Dark World](movie:206462))

At #5, this Marvel baddie is one who wanted to plunge the universe back into darkness. And that is Malekith. Now Christopher Eccleston is no stranger to playing the villain, due to his portrayal as James McCullen/Destro in 2009's GI JOE The Rise of Cobra. But his portrayal as the leader of the evil Dark Elves who wished to destroy the universe made him an indestructible force of evil due to the power of the Aether, which is another of the Infinity Stones. Now this villain was one that needed to be ranked higher on the list due to his work in trying to destroy everything as we know it while trying to fight off Thor and Loki.

4. Red Skull (Hugo Weaving; Captain America: The First Avenger)

Now these next few villains, I had to juggle around. So #4 was ranked for Red Skull, who led HYDRA during World War II in Captain America: The First Avenger. Now this villain was after an Infinity Stone too. This being the Tesseract which was the first one introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and being one of the center pieces in The Avengers. Not only that, but Red Skull had to keep his face hidden through a face mask to keep his true features a secret for the first quarter of the film. When Captain America came along, Red Skull found it difficult to get his plans of world domination into order because of Cap's attempts to taking HYDRA down. But he also has a passion for Norse myth due to his beliefs of the gods leaving a great power hidden in the Earth.

3. Thanos (Josh Brolin; The Avengers; Guardians of the Galaxy)

Coming to #3, though this villain is a bigger bad, he is not my #1 MCU villain. That villain being Thanos. Yes I know. He is a puppet master to some villains. He has a potential to rule the universe through the power of the Infinity Stones and the Infinity Gauntlet (seen in Thor). He provided Loki with his Chitauri army to destroy New York via the Tesseract. And he sends out Ronan the Accuser to track down the Orb (another Infinity Stone). Now it is unclear if he will appear in Avengers Age of Ultron. But I have a feeling that we will see him again in either Guardians of the Galaxy 2 or another Marvel film. This villain's power is so strong, he has to send down his henchmen to do his dirty work at times (think Power Rangers if you will).

2. Loki (Tom Hiddleston; Thor; The Avengers; Thor The Dark World)

Coming to the #2 spot is none other than everyone's fave Marvel villain, Loki!!! Now he started out to being a Frost Giant in Thor who wanted to rule over Asgard and get rid of Odin and Thor. He then went on to trying to destroy New York in The Avengers through the power of the Tesseract, which he promised Thanos with his own given army of Chitauri alien soldiers. And he then was imprisoned in Asgard by Thor in Thor: The Dark World and was recruited by Thor to help him destroy the Dark Elves. Now this villain is the most interesting. But I wouldn't consider him a villain in Thor: The Dark World due to his heroic activity. But since everyone loves him, I had to put him on the list.

1. Alexander Pierce (Robert Redford; Captain America: The Winter Soldier)

Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce
Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce

Now my #1 Marvel Cinematic Universe villain (as of right now) is none other than a villain that is considered to being in the political thriller category. And that villain is Alexander Pierce. Now the most sinister of the villains on this list was also the most suspicious of the characters in [Captain America: The Winter Soldier](movie:254973). Now Pierce starts out as a member of the SHIELD World Security Council. And I thought of him to being one of the good guys in the film. But when I watched the scene about the history of HYDRA, I thought to myself 'Who is the new leader for the HYDRA cell inside SHIELD?' And it was revealed that Alexander Pierce was the leader in the squad of HYDRA agents within SHIELD. Now Robert Redford was the most interesting choice to portray this character. Because I had a theory about him being the main antagonist in the film. And I was correct. That was a total surprise for me.

And that is my top 10 Marvel Cinematic Universe villains list. Who is your favorite? Did I miss anyone? Leave your comments below.
