Despite its immense popularity, it never would have occurred to me that Asterix, the Franco-Belgian creation, has historically outsold most American comics worldwide. That seems insane! Yet the series which follows the exploits of a village of indefatigable Gauls as they resist Roman occupation (with the help of a magic potion which gives them superhuman strength) has been translated into over 100 languages, and it is extremely popular in most European countries. So far, the 34 Asterix books have sold a total of 325 million copies worldwide, making co-creators René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo some of France’s bestselling authors.

I'm pretty excited that the titular character Asterix the Gaul is getting the 3D animation treatment. This follows on the heels of 3D animated Tintin before it (a 2011 project of Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson). This movie is called Asterix: Le Domain de Dievx (Land of the Gods) and the studio have just released their first still image and poster via Films Animation!

This is not the first movie adaptation though - the series has spawned 12 films: eight animated, and four with live actors. There are video games too, and EVEN a theme park near Paris, Parc Astérix! But this is the first 3D animation film.
