A live action Ghost in the Shell film has been confirmed, and now has a director. Rupert Sanders, the director of Snow White and the Huntsman, will take the reigns on bringing the very popular Japanese Animation to life.
Let me be honest, I DON'T LIKE THIS IDEA! Maybe if it had a better director, I would be less concerned. Anime films have had a bad track record so far, so of course I'm concerned. This isn't just an action film. This is a very complex story line, filled with philosophical undertones, that help drive the story alone. You're going to need an actress that will not break under the weight of the stories complexities. With that said, I guess there is no point crying over spilled milk. I started thinking of some actresses that would fit the title role as Major Motoko Kusanagi, (However, if a western actress is cast, I don't know what the name will be changed to, if at all).
5 TALENTED actresses came to mind. Having the right actress is absolutely essential to making this movie a success. Kusanagi is the tough as nails team leader of a special operatives team. With that said, she is also very reserve, mysterious, intellectual and a bit tortured. You will need a actress that can express various emotions in a way that will be believable to the story. Anyway here are my picks for lead in the live action version of Ghost in the Shell.
RINKO KIKUCHI : Anime is Familiar Territory
Why: Kukuchi is an oscar nominated actress who has shown she can be diverse. From Babel to 47 Ronin, she's capable of doing it all. She also has experience with Japanese anime voice over work, and has lent her voice to anime films like Sky Crawlers. I'm sure she is more than familiar with the Ghost in the Shell story, which would give her quite the advantage.
EVA GREEN: A hint of mystery
Why: Everyone's favorite bad girl is well suited for the role. This choice shouldn't come as a shock to anyone. Winner of the BAFTA's rising star award in 2007, Eva Green would bring subtle, quite edge, to this role. I believe the actress and Motoko Kusanagi are somewhat similar to one another, which I think would create a better connection between the actress and the character. Also, the dark, and moody tone of Ghost in the Shell would fit Eva Green's personality quite nicely.
KERRY WASHINGTON: The outlier
Why: Kerry Washington's career has been on the up and up the last 2 to 3 years. The Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG nominated actress has been the talk of the town due to her role in the ABC TV show Scandal. I'd like to see her in more features and more action roles. She has a sassiness about her. I can see her delivering some of those infamous Major Kusanagi one liners.
KATE BECKINSALE: No explanation needed
Why: Underworld, Total Recall, Van Helsing, Martial Artist, Talented, period.
JENNIFER LAWRENCE: A different direction
Why: Jennifer Lawrence is actually an interesting choice. I'm sure everyone is up to speed on her acting track record, so I don't have to go over that. Her recent roles where very animated, full of personality, and very color. Kusanagi, while charming, and charismatic, is the opposite of the various characters Lawrence has portrayed on screen. Tall, dark, and mysterious, not something I would be use to seeing from Jennifer Lawrence, but it would be a nice change of pace. My only fear is that this would be to her career, what Aeon Flux was to Charlize Theron.
Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Olga Kurylenko
