For those of you who keep tabs on foreign films that generate buzz in the US, you will probably remember 2012's The Raid: Redemption. When The Raid came out, it was immediately regarded as one of the best action movies in decades. It was pretty much considered a straight up action movie with a decent plot, but now that we know of the sequel and have seen trailers for it, that "decent plot" turned out to be just a snippet in a much larger and more complicated story (director Gareth Evans plans to make this a trilogy).
The Raid 2: Berandal is already generating buzz after it's showing at Sundance, and early reviews are almost unanimously positive. Word is that this sequel is even better than the first.
Here are some brief reviews to get you excited....
"The action sequences are simply unreal; bigger, faster, and more lethal than in The Raid." ~Travis Hopson (Examiner.com)
"Electrifying both in its ambition and its action sequences, this is the best action-thriller since The Dark Knight, and also the best sequel since then." ~Tim Grierson (Paste Magazine)
"With its long takes, clear camera work, sublime set design and how-did-the-stuntmen-live? action-scene insanity, The Raid 2 makes most American action films look like the over-edited stunt-doubled CGI-laden child's play that they are." ~James Rocchi (The Playlist)
I don't know about you guys, but I'm pumped for this movie (currently holding a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 16 positive to 1 negative review).
If you haven't seen the first movie here is the trailer.
And here is the trailer for (in my opinion) what will eventually be considered 2014's best film, The Raid 2: Berandal.
