As far as anyone can tell, they are entirely serious: new start-up BiteLabs want to grow and sell salami made from artificially grown animal meat, combined with manufactured and harvested celebrity flesh.
Of course, anyone who saw these images would think they were a hoax - but journalists have been in touch with BiteLabs' creator "Kevin", who insists they are sincere, saying:
To develop Celebrity Meat, we're working with a group of bio-engineers and food designers, most of which have requested to remain anonymous due to the controversial nature of the product.
Kevin also claimed that he and his team were "100% serious" - though he did not quite say that actually making the meat was what they were serious about, claiming instead:
BiteLabs is 100% serious in prompting widespread discussion about bioethics, lab-grown meats, and celebrity culture - this is very important to us. Making celebrity meat a reality from there will all depend on our ability to build a user-base.
The process they will use is apparently similar to that of the Google Burger. Each sausage will contain "roughly 30% celebrity meat" with 40% animal meat and the remainder of the salami made up of fats and spices.
Have a look at the professional-seeming BiteLabs website - and let us know whether you think this is a hoax or not. And while we're at it - which celebrity meat would you most want to consume?
