It is no secret that Super Hero movies make big money right now. A genre that has always had a following but only in the last 15 years has broken big ground in becoming household names. With many fans complaining of it being a boys club at the moment and not enough women it is something 1 country has never failed to produce. I give you the Magical Girls! Magical Girls is a genre in anime where typically a 14-16 year old girl is granted amazing powers to protect to world through magic. Now this may sound crazy to some of you but the genre has been popular over in Japan for decades! Here are 5 Magical Girl anime series that could give great inspiration for a live action film featuring girls who stand up against evil.

5. Operation Vividred

Here is an interesting 'Magical Girl' series as the girls are powered by science rather than magic. This team of 4 are powered by the world 100% free and clean power system called the Manifestation Engine. An entity from another dimension is determined to destroy the Manifestation Engine as they believe it is to powerful for anyone civilization to be trusted with. So we have a plot, but this is where it gets clever. Red can 'dock' with 1 of the other 3 to create an ultimate warrior. When she docks with Blue they create Vividblue who wields a might hammer and is a powerhouse of a fighter. When she docks with Green they create Vividgreen who wields a HUGE sword that extends for deadly slashing attacks. When she combines with Yellow they become Vividyellow who creates a massive energy based weapon to shoot long distance. The series gives you all you could want for a 100% girl powered movie.

4. Precure

Well this is Japan's counterpart of Super Sentai (the show they use to make Power Rangers) but it is all for the girls. Each year sees a new story and a new team to fight it. With each series new powers and abilities come to the characters and as with many shows like this you tend to have that 1 character on a path of redemption. Series have ranged from a pair who must be together to use their powers to teams of 4/5/6 members all fighting together as a united and supporting each other. The powers can also be varied, 1 series used flowers as the basis for all of it's character designs and powers where another used the elements light, fire, lightning, wind and ice. The series itself is very lighthearted and just easy to watch but if you took the elements and added a more adult story it could really work as a live action movie full of magically powered girls.

3. Symphogear

Symphogear Useres

Now here was a clever series in how the girls become powerful warriors. The world is being invaded by an enemy called Noise, now stop laughing at the name as all these guys need do is touch you and you turn to carbon dust! Bet the name does not seem like something to worry about now. So how do these girls fight it without turning to carbon dust? They use the Symphogear! Each gear is powered by an ancient relic that only activated when a person with the correct harmonics sings the activation song. So basically it is all down to how the girl sings. But that is not where it ends. The closer the girls harmonics is to the relic makes them more deadly and they girls use their songs to activate the deadly arsenal at their disposal. They even have a deadly song called the swan song, when the gear user sings her swan song she releases all the gears powers with no regard to their body which normally results in the death of the user. Now considering all of that just imagine watching a live action film and you suddenly see a girl singing her swan song ready to die to save all around her. It would be pretty intense to watch.

2. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Sayaka, Homura, Madoka, Mami, Kyoko

Now the creator of this series took the typical rules of magical girl series and burnt it! Puella Magi Madoka Magica broke every rule. These girls are met by a lovely little fairy called Kyubi who offers to grant any wish they want in exchange for them becoming a magical girl. The fate of every magical girl created is destined to die and become a witch, the very thing the magical girls are meant to stop. When a girl discovers the truth they tend to give up and the process happens even quicker. The only way to stop their evil fate is to cleans their magic using seeds dropped by witches when defeated to cleanse their soul gem. The soul gem is where the girls spirit resides and they have to keep with close proximity of their soul gem as their bodies are now nothing more than an avatar to give them form. If the soul gem is destroyed the girl will also die. There was much more to the story as there was a mystery behind Madoka and why she had the potential to become the most powerful magical girl and most powerful witch, but if I told you it all it would ruin it. The series has everything you want in a live action hero flick, a gripping story, deception, pain and self sacrifice.

1. Sailor Moon

Inner, Sailor Moon + Chibi Moon, Outer.
Inner, Sailor Moon + Chibi Moon, Outer.

Perhaps the most famous magical girl series of all time. This series had a complex story line and a diverse range of character. An ancient love story that ended in tragedy only for hundreds of years later all the players to be reborn in the present day. Sailor Moon is the reincarnation of the Princess of the Moon and is protected by the Inner Senshi consisting of Sailor Mercure, Mars, Jupiter and lead by Sailor Venus. Their job is to protect their princess from all evils within our solar system. Later they are joined by Sailor Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and eventually Sailor Saturn who make the Outer Senshi who are charged with protecting their Princess from threats outside our solar system. This is great for Sailor Moon having 8 bodyguards but Sailor Moon does not want to hurt anyone, even the bad guy. All she wants to do is save others, which tends to cause conflict between the Inner Senshi and the Outer Senshi due to the Outer Senshi mainly consisting of older members who know war has casualties. This was most evident when 3 Sailor Senshi from another galaxy arrive on Earth and the Outer Senshi want then to stay away from their Princess. With 200 episode making 5 series and 3 movies to accompany them it gives plenty of ideas for an amazing super heroine movie.

These are only 5, but as you can see each 5 does work off of different ideas. So if we all get bored of the boys club we can hope Hollywood will look to Japan for some inspiration and how to make us all question what is right and wrong through the eyes on innocence.
