There are lots of scenes in our movies that come right out of the comics, and there are so many iconic moments in comic book history and so many of them have yet to be seen in films.
Here is a wish list of things I'd like to see brought into future franchises.
Magneto rips the adamantium off Wolverine's body
I doubt we'll ever get to see this in a film, and I do think that Wolverine in DOFP will not have an adamantium skeleton as it takes place before his adamantium skeleton is infused onto him.
Magneto is the ultimate enemy of the Xavier's X-Men, even though several times in the comics and movies they do ally themselves together for any larger threats that come up. In the movies they've overused Magneto's manipulation of Wolverine's metal skeleton, but one thing that was a missed opportunity was Magneto ripping all the adamantium off Wolverine's skeleton and out of his body. It would be an extremely raw and damaging scene, and would show just how evil and dangerous Magneto actually is.
Spider-Man unmasking himself on Live TV in support of the Superhuman Registration Act, during the Superhero Civil War
I'm almost sure we'll never see this one, but it would be a very interesting move for the Spider-man franchise. One thing that I have loved in the Avengers franchises so far is that none of them are hiding behind their masks. In the comics Iron Man, Thor and Captain America all keep their identities secret for long periods of time. Tony Stark passes off the Iron Man as his personal bodyguard for decades, even Thor wore jeans and took the name Donald Blake when he wasn't dressed as the Asgardian to throw people off. I do love that these movies have left these story-lines out, it is something that Batman, Superman and Spider-man have done over and over and it's really refreshing to see something different and public, I think it would be a great move for a Spider-man movie, maybe a cliff hanger for the second to last movie. I know we won't see a Superhero Civil War storyline in Spider-man since Sony owns the rights to him and his characters but not any of the other major players, but we could still see something similar to this jaw dropping scene played out.
New Avengers fight at the Raft super-villain breakout
The super-villain prisons are a staple part of story lines in the comics, and even in the wonderful cartoon Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and we've already had a mention of such a prison in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
It would be fun to see more of the prison and what the government is doing with super powered criminals. I would really like to see a super-villain breakout and the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. trying to hold them off from escaping.
Genosha's Growth and Destruction
For those who don't know Genosha is an island off the coast of Madagascar that grew to economic prosperity through their use of mutant slaves. Eventually Magneto and the Brotherhood overthrew the government and created a mutant type utopia. Mutants from all over the world were invited and guaranteed refuge and freedom. Eventually a large army of Sentinels were sent to Genosha and killed 16 million mutants and the entire island was destroyed.
This would be a really amazing thing to see in a movie, it would be fun to see a pure mutant nation led by Magneto, and it would be interesting to see (especially with the introduction of the Sentinels in the upcoming DOFP movie) the destruction of the nation. Really violent, yes, but such a core part of the X-Men universe, with defining moments for not only Magneto, one of the few survivors, but many of the X-Men as well after they went in to help with the search for survivors and re-build. It changes how many of them view humankind and their hate and fear becomes so huge with a toll of 16 million dead. If we don't get to see the destruction I'd understand it is pretty dark, but it would be pretty awesome to see the Brotherhood take down the government and create their mutant nation.
Apocalypse and his Horsemen
With the announcment of the X-Men Apocalypse movie set for 2016 we know we're finally getting Apocalypse! I'm really looking forward to seeing him and what it'll bring to the X-Men franchise, but what I'm most curious about is who will be his Four Horsemen?
In the comics there have been many different incarnations of the Horsemen including: Angel, Wolverine, Polaris, Gambit, Hulk, and most recently Sentry, Daken, and Banshee. Often these characters are resurrected from the dead so this would be a very fun way to bring back characters we have missed out on in the franchise so far, and since Apocalypse exists outside of time we could resurrect Cyclops or Jean Grey and get them back! Gambit maybe? It would be an easy way to bring him back into the mainstream continuity and could be an excuse for the age difference between Gambit from Wolverine. The one that we HAVE to see is Angel as Archangel, the Horsemen of Death. He's easily the most recognizable horsemen in the comics and has the most ongoing consequence of being a horsemen. We'll definitely be seeing someone as the horsemen, the only question is who, who would you like to see?
Gwen Stacey's Death
With Spider-man 2 coming to theaters in May the biggest things fans are talking about is if Gwen Stacy will die. In the comics she is thrown off the George Washington Bridge by Green Goblin but Spider-man can't get to her in time so he spins his web towards her, grabs her, causing her neck to snap, killing her. It's one of the most defining moments in Peter Parker's life, second only to the death of his Uncle Ben.
Emma Stone, who plays Gwen Stacey has been spotted wearing similar styles clothes to what Gwen wore when she died in the comics.
"Basically they're going to see the continuation of the Spider-Man story, which is the hero's journey, and he's up against a whole new squadron of villains and he's struggling with promises he's made in the last movie and the consequences of making those and what it's like to be in love with somebody who you promised to not see anymore. I think the intention the whole time has been to tell Gwen's story has closely to the comic as possible."
Emma Stone has even been quoted saying that she believes the character will die. Personally I would really like to see how the comic book movie genre could handle a death on this level, she and Peter Parker are the new Spider-man franchise. What would happen if you took one of them away? I would really like to see how this could affect and change Peter Parker fore the future of the Spider-man.
With the Scarlet Witch being introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron this is more likely, but still unlikely. For those unfamiliar with this story; long time Avengers team member, Scarlet Witch, who can control and change reality unconsciously creates a Kree invasion, dozens of Ultron robots, and several other incidents all intending to harm and kill the Avengers, she succeeds in killing Hawkeye, her husband Vision and Scott Lang. During the attacks the Avengers mansion is destroyed and in the end, after they realize everything is because of the Scarlet Witch she is taken away by Magneto, Xavier and Dr. Strange, and most importantly Iron Man dissolves the Avengers team and everyone goes their own separate ways.
The parts that really interest me for a movie is Avenger vs. Avenger, and the utter chaos as the team is destroyed from within. I also think that dissolving the Avengers team would create some great possibilities for solo movies, and then creating a much larger threat to bring the Avengers back together.
House of M
Shortly after the Scarlet Witch destroys the Avengers from within she's taken to Genosha by Magneto and Xavier. Magneto is trying to be the father he never was and make it up to his children, and Xavier is trying to use his psychic abilities to help Wanda put her mind back together and help her learn to control her abilities. In the image above she has created children for her and husband Vision and Xavier is trying to help her realize that they never existed, that her children were created by her powers. During this time her brother Quicksilver convinces her to re-create the world around mutants being the majority and humans the minority. They create this world where Magneto is the ruler of Earth surrounded by his loving and loyal family and subjects. All over the world the Avengers and X-Men have new lives and are unaware of their original ones.
Once some of them start to see through the illusion that Scarlet Witch has created they attack Magneto's castle in Genosha as a distraction while a smaller team is sent inside the castle in hopes to find Xavier so they can set things back to how they were. Instead Wanda gets madder telling their attackers that she gave them happy lives, and that they should be content, she turns the world back to normal but utters the words "no more mutants..." Emma Frost and Dr. Strange's magic protect less than 200 mutants who keep their powers, and Wanda de-powers thousands of mutants across the globe. It's a chilling ending to the House of M, and would be a great cliffhanger and lead into other X-Men films. I think this story line would be completely possible in the X-Men universe, and even though the Avengers and X-Men can't appear in the same movies I think you could do the House of M story line without the Avengers.
The Death of Captain America
I think I'm in the very small minority that thinks this would be a cool idea. Joss Whedon has said that not all the Avengers may make it out of Age of Ultron, and with the Winter Soldier being introduced in our next Captain America movie I think it would be a really interesting move to kill of Steve Rogers, and then introduce Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, as the new Captain America. This is what happened in the comics during the Death of Captain America. I think it would be really fun to see the passing of the torch of such a famous superhero icon to another. I don't think it's that far fetched, in the comics there are lots of examples of heroes passing on their uniforms and names to the next generation.
I think realistically the best way to handle a story line like this would be in three separate movies;
- Avengers Age of Ultron, kill of Steve Rogers
- Avengers 3, The Avengers reach out to Bucky Barnes to be the new Captain America
- Captain America 3, Bucky Barnes learns what it means to hold the shield and name of Captain America
I think it's the idea of it that gets me more excited, I would really like to see how they'd handle the death of such an iconic hero.
