On Monday, The Weinstein Co. said it plans to open Stephen Frears' British dramedy Philomena in New York and Los Angeles on Nov. 22, before spreading to more than 500 theaters on Nov. 27 (the Wednesday before Thanksgiving).
The decision is based on moviegoing trends over the holiday weekend, where- according to The Hollywood Reporter- TWC believes that 'Philomena will serve as potent counterprogramming to more commercial fare'.
Philomena stars Steve Coogan, a journalist who follows a woman's search (played by Judi Dench) for her son that she was forced to relinquish for adoption decades earlier; which takes them on a journey to the U.S.
The Hollywood Reporter also comment that:
Philomena made its world premiere in competition at the recent Venice International Film Festival, where Coogan and Jeff Pope won the award for best screenplay. The film next made its North American debut at the Toronto Film Festival. Are you excited to watch Philomena?
