What a weirdly appropriate choice: Sofia Coppola, the director of Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette and The Bling Ring, will go under the sea for The Little Mermaid.

According to Deadline, Coppola is in talks to helm the live-action adaptation of Hans-Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale. The latter was already famously made into a chirpy Disney movie, and most recently beautifully adapted anew by the great Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki with Ponyo.

Coppola has a very moody, atmospheric directing style that should work just fine with the tale of a melancholic mermaid princess yearning to be human. I can already see the waves looking all creamy to the sound of The Cure…

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Before Coppola came on board, Joe Wright of Pride & Prejudice and Atonement fame was attached.

What do you think? Is Coppola the right choice?
