Sunspot is one of the new characters added to Fox's X-men Cinematic Universe for [X-Men: Days Of Future Past](movie:203942) coming out in may. Not a lot has been released concerning his character or how he will be used; past or future. But what we know we will share here.
Screenrant.com explained him this way:
Similar to his ally in arms Warpath, Sunspot (Adan Canto) is a powerful mutant who can harnesses the power of the sun. In the comics, he can fly and when using his mutant abilities he turns black as he absorbs and re-channels light. Days of Future Past marks the first appearance of the character in the films, and it looks (from the burn marks on his body) as though his powers come at a cost.
So, Sunspot will pair up with Warpath in the movie and, according to the bio sheet given below, he will be a part of the Resistance in the future part of the movie. It also confirms that he will have the power of flight, superhuman strength and solar absorption.
Adan Canto spoke to Fandago about researching the character:
“It wasn’t entirely a new world because I had followed the previous movies, but I did jump into the comic books world a bit to understand: Who is this guy? What’s his life like?” Canto said. “I just find I work better that way when I understand what’s in his mind, where he’s coming from. I pretty much took most of the things I read and I brought them to the table. He’s a fiery guy. There’s a lot of passion with Sunspot – a lot of experiences that brought him to want to explode all the time, but he’s a positive guy. There was just a lot of material – very helpful!”
In the comics, Sunspot aka Roberto ('Bobby') De Costa was born the son of a rich, Brazilian businessman. He was accepted into the ranks of a team known as THE NEW MUTANTS and debuted in the first issue. He has also spent time as the leader of one of the X-Men's enemies, THE HELLFIRE CLUB. Strangely enough, both he and NEW MUTANT'S founding member, Cannonball, have joined the ranks of the Avengers.
De Costa is a hot head and an idealist. He is known for using his powers and his wealth to try and change the world for good. In the movie, apparently, he will be involved with the remnant of the Mutant Resistance of the Future X-Men in a world regulated by Sentinels and oppressive to Mutantkind.
Of course, we have to wonder just how much time he will actually get as more and more characters get their screen time cut (Paquin and Berry come to mind). Plans were for Sunspot to make the cut in FIRST CLASS. But, finally, we get to see his powers in action on the big screen. Hopefully, we will get more than a flash from the future and, when all of the dust clears after one or two more movies, we can see him enter the main timeline in all of his glory!
