They make your heart skip a beat, and when used well can be really effective. Here is my top 10 list of Jump scares which have had me 6ft in the air!

10: ' Darth Maul Demon ' from Insidious. Popping up from absolutely no where, this one is sure to give you a fright!

A Nightmare On Elm Street 2010

9: What an awesome ending! Now this movie gets a lot of hate for being the 'worst remake ever made' but I actually really enjoyed it! It showed the more ' pedophile ' side to Mr Krueger, which we were meant to see in the original, but never did due to a child molester on the news at the time. Although I could say Jump scares are used a little too often for comfort in this movie ( especially during the first 30 minutes ) this final scare was definitely the best! After being supposedly killed by Nancy and company, Freddy appears behind the mirror to finish mentally scarring Nancy by stabbing her mother through the back of the head, and pulling her backwards through the mirror!

8: Why do you think we got a jump scare at the end of the remake? Well because it happens in the original of course! Just as in the remake, Freddy's back from the dead to crash through the front door and pull Nancy's mother through!

The Exorcist 1973

7: Named the scariest scene in cinematic history, the spiderwalk scene left thousands of people trembling in fear! Out of nowhere, possessed Regan does her infamous back crunching crawl down the stairs, followed by a fountain of blood pouring from her mouth.

Jaws 1975

6: Of course as soon as Brody turns his back, that's when Bruce the infamous shark makes his first appearance.

Alien 1979

5: Although there was a decent build up to this one, no one ever expected to see an Alien pop out of the crew member's chest! Using real pig guts, this is another famous scene considered one of the scariest in film history.

The Thing 1982

4: Woah! No one expected that! I personally jumped a foot in the air when the stomach opened and chomped off the poor guys hands!

Halloween 2007

3: 'I thought he was dead!' The supposedly dead Michael Myers comes back to get his vengeance on Dr Loomis, and maybe kill his sister at the same time.

Bride Of Chucky 1998

2: This one had my heart hammering for a good ten minutes! Talk about unexpected, Glen's birth gave a chilling end to an epic film.

Friday The 13th 1980

1: Jason's first appearance! I think of all jump scares in movies, this one got me the best. Completely unexpected, a young and rather dead Jason Voorhees lunges out of the lake to get vengeance on the girl who beheaded his loving mother.
