In response to the Warner Bros.' having cast Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily in Pan, after only two days, a Care2 petition which challenges the casting decision now has over 4,000 signatures. Apparently there has been a response, though the "statement" was not officially direct from the studio. According to The Hollywood Reporter, a previous rumor was that Lupita Nyong'o was in line to play Tiger Lily in the reboot.
The Hollywood Reporter go on to highlight that the petition notes that the character Tiger Lily in the J. M. Barrie classic is a Native American princess, stating:
The casting choice is particularly shameful for a children's movie. Telling children their role models must all be white is unacceptable.
It stars Mara and two white guys -- Hugh Jackman and Garrett Hedlund. Not so multi-racial after all, Warner Bros. Tell Warner Bros. to stop casting white actors to play characters originally written as people of color!
For those of you who may not know the source of the uproar, the character 'Tiger Lily is the daughter of the Native Chief and a loyal friend of Peter Pan'. It's because of this association with Peter Pan, that she is captured by Captain Hook and tied to a rock in the bay whilst the tide is out. He offers to set her free only if she reveals the location of Peter Pan, though meanwhile points out the rising tide; a nod to the American Indian belief the death by drowning prevents one from making it 'to the Happy Hunting Grounds'.
Interestingly, Tiger Lily was dropped from the Disney sequel Return to Neverland which was supposedly due to the controversial backlash over the ethnic stereotyping of some of the characters; including Tiger Lily in the original story by J.M. Barrie.
Pan is set for release on July 17, 2015. though we'll have wait and see if this controversy will stunt its success, what are your thoughts?
