We're going to see hard-man, and Fast and the Furious star Vin Diesel in the unlikely role of the gentle tree, Groot, in the hotly anticipated Marvel adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy. Groot is a human-like tree who is Rocket Raccoon's BFF.

Marvel are obviously pretty happy with their decision - Kevin Feige, their President of Production said “involving Vin Diesel in this is great fun.”

“He is an unbelievably passionate guy. When I called him and asked if he would be interested in playing a character that’s a tree and says only three words, without hesitation he said, ‘I’m in.’”

So he's not a man of many words then, it seems.

Perhaps that's why playing Groot appealed to him. It seems that it actually was the succinct nature of the dialogue that appealed to Diesel.

“How they were able to reinforce the theme, the meaning and the message of the whole movie in one line of character dialogue impressed me...and how that line translates in the third act is really going to be something that allows the audience to feel like they are part of this world and understand the stakes a what the characters are going through.”

So it sounds like even though Groot doesn't have much to say, his role is important. Guardians director James Gunn has said that that, even though Groot can only communicate in three words, “his story breaks your heart.”

We'll take your word for it, James Gunn.
