Tucker and Dale Vs Evil was a good example of a simple premise done well. A group of college kids encounter a couple of rednecks living in the woods, and proceed to die one by one.
Usually you would know the formula. Except that this time, it wasn't the rednecks who were out to kill the rich kids (as in Deliverance, or The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or Psycho, or The Hills Have Eyes, or almost any other horror movie).
In fact, it was the college kids' weird paranoia (probably from watching too many horror movies) that was leading the suspect the innocent woodsmen. In fact, they became so hysterical they began to impale themselves on tree branches, shoot each other and generally kill themselves and each other in all manner of hilarious and unexpected ways.
