Last we heard, Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in the first three Star Wars movies and returned to reprise the role in Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, was not going to return for J.J. Abrams [Star Wars: Episode VII](movie:711158) due to age and injury...
But the latest developments suggest that the seven feet three inches tall actor could, in fact, be returning as Chewie in 2015!
What do we have to go on? Well, recently, the Comicpalooza convention in Houston, Texas posted the following:
Comicpalooza is held May 23-26 and Abrams' Star Wars: Episode VII was recently confirmed to start filming in May 2014. Given that Mayhew doesn't take on new movie projects very often, it seems like a rather large coincidence that he's shooting a new project in May... Jus' sayin'.
Mayhew has previously explained that he created Chewbacca's movement by studying that of large animals at the zoo. Mayhew was a one-in-a-million Chewbacca – when he grew ill during The Empire Strikes Back, a stand-in of a similar height was used instead, but the actor couldn't match Mayhew's distinctive style of movement so the scenes had to be re-shot when he was better.
That said, would you guys want to see Mayhew return to the franchise? Do you think this means what we think it means? Drop your comments below!
Star Wars: Episode VII arrives in theaters in 2015.
