When I first read of Terry Crew's interest in the character Luke Cage, I was a little apprehensive. But, the more and more I watch 'Brooklyn Nine Nine' the more I'm appreciating him as an actor. (Not to mention his brilliant acting range in the old spice adverts)
I'm unsure if Marvel are considering him for the role. But with TV's Dexter in the running for Daredevil, I can safely say anything's possible from Marvel. I'm liking the idea of a Daredevil/Dexter and a Luke Cage/Crews teaming up to help bring a little charisma to the small screen. Luke cage is a powerful and very important character in the marvel universe, and represents so much to so many people. He is unquestionably one of the most integral characters in the Marvel Universe regarding what he stands for and symbolises. This being so, we need an equally powerful and strong actor to encapsulate his significance.
Judging from the picture above, it's almost as if Cage and Crews were separated at birth! Fans clamour for actors who embody their favourite characters because, as they know, the 'look' is 80% of the casting battle. If the actor doesn't look the part, then fans won't buy into the concept - it's that simple.
Crews himself was initially sceptical about the idea because he was concerned about being pitted against his friends for a role that, as he commented, 'doesn't even exist yet'. But since the project was 'greenlit' he seems more open to the idea. He commented:
"I heard it's greenlit but I haven't gotten any calls. I've been hearing stuff like oh you're too old and I'm like, man do my workout 20 years ago and we'll see who's to old (laughs).
I think Crews would be an inspired choice and give the actor a more serious and hardened role to play. He has the acting chops, the physicality and the persona to pull off the role. Moreover, it appears he's waiting for Marvel to pick up the phone and make it happen:
"Like I said, anything can happen, I never rule anything out. I'm game. There are no rules. What's up marvel? I'm right here baby. I ain't goin' nowhere. you know where I live!" (laughs)
So take note Marvel and hit the guy up! Personally I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this casting choice because I think Crews has the charisma and personality to pull any team together, and add a little "old spice" to Luke Cage's wise-cracking, hard-as-nails persona.
But enough of mine and Terry's opinions! What do you guys think? Does Terry Crews have what it takes to helm the defenders? Sound off below if you're a true believer!
