Run for your lives! The new Godzilla is in town!

With Godzilla fever in the air, t seemed a good time to celebrate my favorite of the Golden Oldies...my top 5 Godzilla movies.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Destroy All Monsters (1968)

Only 3 of the Godzilla movies omit the G-man from the title, and this is the best of them (in my humble opinion). All of the monsters you could ever want, amassed into one giant superbattle film of 60's epicness.

4. Return of Godzilla (1985)

Released as simply 'Godzilla' in Japan, 1984.

An exuberant celebration of the 30 year anniversary of the original Godzilla movie, Return of Godzilla features a weirdly humanoid monster; his human eyes make him kind of empathetic in the first of the 80's Heisei movies.

3. Godzilla 2000 (1999)

Godzilla 2000: a monster for the milennium.
Godzilla 2000: a monster for the milennium.

After a brief hiatus, Toho returned to Godzilla movies with their Milennium series, choosing action over continuity for their spiny new creation. Any movie that starts with a UFO found in an old Japanese trench is good for me.

2. Godzilla Vs. Hedorah (1971)

Alternative title: Godzilla vs the Smog Monster.

I must say, my reasons for loving this late Toho Showa Godzilla movie are based entirely on its full-scale craziness. There's fish people, flying Godzilla, and a bad guy like a mutant Dr Zoidberg. Awesome.

1. Godzilla (1998)

Epic battle: Godzilla vs. Matthew Broderick.

...only kidding! My Real Number One: Godzilla (1954)

He wreaked havoc: the original Toho Showa Godzilla.
He wreaked havoc: the original Toho Showa Godzilla.

I know it seems a cop-out to pick the movie that started it all, but Godzilla is the original and best-loved in my eyes, and one which stands up to constant revisiting. Post-war radiation paranoia came full-force in Toho Showa's first Godzilla movie, taking the world by storm. Unbeatable.

What's your favorite Godzilla movie?
