Ten long, long years have gone by since Zach Braff's directorial debut Garden State struck a chord among fans with its melancholy take on mid-20s life, its Pitchfork heavy soundtrack and its classic Manic Pixie Dream Girl Natalie Portman. Braff is finally ready to follow up his Sundance favorite with [Wish I Was Here](movie:908954) — a sequel in spirit if not in narrative.
While Garden State and its creator may now be subject to plenty of internet sneering, Braff still has a keen fan base who loved JD, loved Garden State and want to see more. It's these fans who made Wish I Was Here possible with 46,000 of them funding the kickstarter campaign that brought the project to life (as well as bringing a wave of criticism down on Braff's head for turning to such a medium to fund his movie).
I for one loved Scrubs and Garden State, and I can't wait to see how Zach Braff has updated his world view from 2004, twee and earnest as it may be. Wish I Was Here will arrive in theaters on July 18.
