Forget Smaug and Bard the Bowman - the most exciting character in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was undoubtedly Beorn, the half-man, half-bear recluse who develops a soft spot for Bilbo and the dwarves.

Here, Mikael Persbrandt talks about his character, and how the vocal effects for a three and a half meter bear need quite a bit of tweaking! Check it out and see what you think:

Brilliant.

Given that Jackson decided to give The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug some extra padding and flesh the plot out with a (perhaps unnecessary) love story, it was mildly disappointed to see that Persbrandt was only in the movie very sporadically.

With any luck, the Desolation of Smaug extended edition Blu-ray and DVD will have more of Beorn to go around, and we'll see him again when The Hobbit: There and Back Again hits theaters on December 17, 2014. After all, that's when things will really kick off with the Battle of Five Armies!
