Ok, let my preface this whole thing by saying that I am huge Superman fan and therefore inherently biased..However, these are some criticisms of superman in the Man of Steel film that I think are not only wrong, but were things that were done in certain other films which didn't get nearly as much hate.
First off - The Kill.
Yup, I'm gonna start with one of the biggest of them all, the killing of Zod.
So many people have hated on this movie because it ended with Superman taking a life. Now, we are gonna ignore the fact that this was a young and inexperienced superman who didn't want to let a family die, or that if theat was us about to be cut in have by heat vision, we wouldn't mind as much, and we are gonna focus on the fact that Batman did almost the same thing, with less reason to do so and I didn't hear have as many people say anything about it.
Wondering what I'm talking about? let me explain..
At the end of Batman Begins, Batman is on the train with Ra's and as its about to crash, Bruce says something like "I'm not gonna kill you, but I don't have to save you."... WHAT? This is supposed to be a someone who is based off a character that refused to Kill the Joker after his sidekick was brutally murdered.. hell in the Dark Knight, he could've thrown that murdering menace off the building and no one in Gotham would've been upset. In Batman Begins, Bruce actively sentences someone to death, just because he didn't use a gun, doesn't mean its not a kill, batman Killed Ra's, not because he had someone else to save, or we wasnt fast or strong enough, he was just spitefull and evidently everyone was okay with that. but when superman fights for 30min with a mass murdering alien and only snaps his neck to save a endangered family, now we are all up in arms in anger.
Throughout the history of these characters Batman has had the same code of not killing as Superman, its one of the few qualities they have in common and being so, they should be held to the same standard.
Next - The destruction
So one of the Major issues people have had with the Man of steel is the fact that during the fight scenes, pretty much all of Smallville and a chunk of Metropolis are completely destroyed, insinuating that thousands of lives are lost in the process. Now in response to this I pose the question:
What is the difference between an Army of Aliens vs A Team of heroes and 3 Aliens vs 1 Hero?
In Man of Steel, Zod and Superman fight in a brutal battle over the streets of Metropolis, causing all kinds of destruction an chaos. In The Avengers, the team of Superheroes fight of the Chitari Army led by the god Loki, causing destruction of their own. Now Here's the difference. If you look closely at both movies, the destruction isnt that widespread throughout the city, in [Man of Steel](movie:15593), Zod and Supes' fight stays pretty much around the ship that was tearing up everything around it anyway. While in Avengers, the fight stayed pretty close to the portal the aliens were coming out of, but the portal itself wasnt causing any damage, so that was all them and the aliens.
Now, Lets look at the validations for these destructive battles.
The Avengers are made of Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. Four of these characters have had at least one whole solo film to get their powers and abilities under control (Iron Man had two films and Im not counting the first Hulk Movie) and the other two have been shown to be masters of their craft. Superman on the other hand is in his first movie, he's an adult in this movie but aside from super strength and a little heat vision, he hasn't been actively using his powers until this point in the movie and it was only hours (maybe days) before the final fight when he even learned how to fly. So Superman control over his powers are in a state of flux which doesn't really allow him to avoid knocking Zod through three skyscrapers.
So thats it, those are my little rants on the undue hate that Superman gets. Let me know what you think..
