If the zombie apocalypse kicks off you'll find me in the Winchester

The Walking Dead returns in October and brings with it the promise of more undead mayhem and freshly-grilled flesh. It's also almost certain that we'll see the tragic death of at least one major character.

Who that is, I don't know for sure, but below are five candidates I think are most likely to meet a grisly end in Season 5. You'll notice I haven't included Rick, Daryl, Carl or Michonne on the list. I think these guys are safe, for now.

Carol

Carol is a bonafide badass
Carol is a bonafide badass

Why she could die:

Carol has been an ever-present on [The Walking Dead](series:201193) since Season 1 but was only upped to series regular for Season 4. She's undoubtedly become more influential as the apocalypse has progressed and proved with the killing of Karen and David she's prepared to do what it takes to keep the group safe.

With Rick and the rest of the group at the mercy of the fools at Terminus, it's not a stretch to imagine Carol trying to bust them out and, as a final act of selflessness, sacrificing herself in order to save the rest.

Why she won't die

Carol has grown from cowed housewife to badass motherfucker, so it will take a lot to convince her to shuffle off this mortal coil. She shot a kid in the head so will have no problem doing what is necessary to survive.

Also, Daryl will be really sad if she dies and no one wants to see that.

Glenn

Why he could die:

Forgive me if this next statement causes anybody offense, but I think Glenn has become one of the most un-engaging characters on The Walking Dead. I get the whole "he's in love with Maggie and will do whatever it takes to keep her safe" storyline, but man, I'm so bored with it. Would anybody really care if Glenn didn't make it to the end of Season 5? I know I wouldn't.

Also, burning the only photo they had of the two of them together is surely a really bad portent of things to come.

Why he won't die:

Because he has a knack of escaping any situation with his life intact, despite how treacherous it seems. Also the love of a good woman is all the motivation you need to survive the zombie apocalypse. Or something like that.

Tyreese

Tyreese is handy with a hammer, and a bucket
Tyreese is handy with a hammer, and a bucket

Why he could die:

The big man has gone through a lot since stumbling across the prison back in Season 3. He's seen comrades fall, his girlfriend get murdered, child-on-child killing, adult-on-child killing and worst of all, he's stuck carrying around someone else's baby. It's been tough.

I wouldn't blame him if he just thought "fuck it" and committed suicide to to get it over and done with.

But I think there might be something more epic in store for Tyreese. Here come the spoilers.

In the comic, after trying to single-handedly thwart the Governor's attack on the prison, Tyreese is brutally beheaded. This fate was taken by Hershel in the show, but it wouldn't be surprising if Tyreese was felled by the blade of a Termite while helping his friends escape.

Or, more likely knowing his luck, he'll step on a rusty nail and die slowly of tetanus. Alone.

Why he won't die:

He's kinda awesome, deadly with a hammer and has an excellent beard. If those things aren't enough to keep you alive in a zombie apocalypse then what's the point of living.

Bob Stookey

Bob is a big fan of the backpack
Bob is a big fan of the backpack

Why he could die:

Let's be honest with ourselves here: We've all been waiting for Bob to snuff it since the moment he arrived. It's nothing personal, but he feels like a classic "Walking Dead B-list character": Important enough to get some backstory and decent screen time, but almost certain to die at any moment. (See also Amy, Jim, T-Dog, Milton...)

For Bob Stookey, I fear it's only a question of "when" not "if" he dies a horrible death.

Why he won't die

Erm, because he's given up the booze and everybody loves a good redemption story? He's got a cheeky smile? Nope, I've got nothing. He's definitely done for.

Beth Greene

Beth is in a tight spot
Beth is in a tight spot

Why she could die:

She's already dead. Chopped up into little pieces and currently in various locations, one of which is the top of the barbecue, the other the stomach of Mary and her fellow Termites.

Why she won't die:

She was rescued by Father Gabriel from the funeral parlor and is currently under his protection near Terminus. Or, she's in one of the train wagons awaiting carving time, but will get rescued by Rick when they all bust out.

Basically, it's 50/50.

Obviously these thoughts are my own and may have caused some of you to disagree with me vehemently. If this is the case, tell me why in the comments below.
