Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the newest superhero movie from MARVEL studios leading up to [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035). In this movie we catch up with Steve Rogers as he adjusts to life in this era, we really see how unfamiliar he is with the modern world. He is now an [Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.](series:722469) so he goes on missions with a team and 'stops bad guys' and the big opening scene is him, Black Widow (Johansson) and his team dropping onto a ship and saving hostages. From the minute that scene started I was blown away. First off I'm going to talk about the performances. Chris Evans returns for the third time as Captain America, but he's no longer in World War 2 or fighting alongside Iron Man, this is the Captain America I have been waiting to see for years. In the first Captain America film and The Avengers, I just saw Chris Evans but after this movie, Evans has truly owned the role, he was absolutely fantastic.

For my whole life Captain America has been one of my favorite heroes, he is the character that taught me morals as a child. He's the most good willed but bad ass hero there is and Evans perfectly portrays that, he not only physically owns the part but also acts the role very well. This is definitely the best performance of Captain America yet! Scarlett Johansson gets a bigger role as Black Widow in this movie and she really shows off her skills in this film, especially in the opening scene where she's creeping round a ship taking bad guys out one by one. But also we see her and Cap's relationship develop and we see a bond grow between them. Samuel L Jackson gets his biggest role in a MARVEL movie yet as Nick Fury, he gets a really great part in the plot of the film and at times I wasn't sure where his character was going, which was great. Anthony Mackie joins the crew as Sam Wilson A.K.A The Falcon who is a character I've been waiting years to see, his costume gets modernized and the wings look awesome. If you don't already know Falcon is a character who can fly and they deal with that quite silly idea in a very real way in the film, making him an ex marine with special equipment that gives him the ability to take to the skies. He added a lot of humor to the movie but not in an annoying way, he was a great character who I'm really disappointed won't be Avengers 2. Sebastian Stan returns as Bucky Barnes A.K.A The Winter Soldier, Captain America's oldest friend turned newest enemy. Sebastian Stan is returning as Bucky from Captain America: The First Avenger but his role is just so brilliant in this movie, and before you claim 'spoiler', its not...this was information given to the public by MARVEL so therefore not a spoiler. But we have to see how Cap is going to deal with the fact that his oldest friend is no longer an ally but an enemy and it was great to see if Bucky ends up remembering who Cap is. And probably the biggest star in the movie, Robert Redford as Alexander Pierce, he is the head of S.H.I.E.L.D and has a very complex role. If you're familiar with the comics you may not be as surprised as to where the character goes but if you're not then you will be surprised. Anthony and Joe Russo were brought onto direct this film and most notably they have directed some episodes of the TV show COMMUNITY so I wasn't sure how well they'd do with this film but they knocked it out of the park. They delivered an action heavy, dramatic and intriguing thriller with great characters! I'm so glad they're returning for Captain America 3! Now this is definitely a superhero movie, it has big characters and big set pieces but for the first half of this movie, it really felt like a political thriller. There's a lot of mystery and conspiracy in this movie that I wasn't expecting and I absolutely loved it. As the movie progresses you venture more into superhero movie territory which was also great but I did prefer the first half because it just felt so fresh and different.

I can't praise this movie enough....its just absolutely brilliant. A great hero, an amazing villain....who is honestly as good as Loki was in Thor and The Avengers. What I loved about the character of the Winter Soldier was he had history with Captain America so it makes it very personal and upsetting because you'll find out, he isn't who he used to be. The Winter Soldier isn't in the movie a whole lot, he's in in for the perfect amount he should be, and he doesn't say a lot because he's just a weapon now, but when he does talk, its great because you learn so much about the character. Sebastian Stan similar to Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, does a lot of acting with his eyes, which is great for a villain, we see what he's thinking just through his eyes. The movie has a run time of around 136 minutes and I honestly could have sat through another hour, this was a fully exhilarating adventure. I've been thinking about this a lot since I saw it last night and I honestly think this is the best MARVEL movie yet....yes.....I believe it is a better movie than The Avengers. What I love about these movies is that they all have a different feel to them, and this is definitely the most interesting MARVEL movie yet. I was on the edge of my seat (literally) for the entire movie, my jaw dropped at some of the scenes and I had the most fun I've had in the theater for a long time. For a huge comic book nerd like me this was a perfect film, the Russo brothers have perfected Captain America, they absolutely nailed it here. What also made me smile a lot were the references to other MARVEL characters, there's around 5 Iron Man references, a couple of Hulk ones and even a Dr. Strange reference which I got so excited about. The thing throughout the film that really had me in awe was the fight choreography, the fights in this movie are possibly the best I have ever seen in a movie. Captain America uses his Vibranium shield so well int his movie, we see it used as both a weapon and a part of his armor. I was in awe at the fights, people are flipping all around the screen and getting hit in the face with Cap's shield and the best thing about that could see everything that was happening because this movie is shot so well. The action is filmed remarkably well, I could see who was punching who and it flowed so perfectly. One negative point about the film is some of the CGI, especially on some green screen sections didn't look amazing but I believe that's because all the money for the CGI went on the big Helicarrier battle at the end which looked beautiful. I almost forgot about the score for this movie, the music is so good! At the beginning we hear the original theme from the first movie but we're quickly introduced to the new score which feels very modern and I loved it! Henry Jackman did the music for this film and he also did the music for X-Men First Class and you can definitely hear some similarities. I'm definitely going to go and see this movie around 2 more times because its an absolute must see, its a fantastic film. And definitely stick around until the very end of the credits because it has two of the best end credits scenes I've ever seen. One that sets up Avengers: Age Of Ultron which honestly made me shout "holy shit!" and one that sets up [Captain America 3](movie:994409)! Please go out and see this movie, its a perfect comic book movie but also a fantastic film. This is more than hat anyone expected, its funny, its intense, its mysterious but most of all, its a very well made and entertaining movie! You're gonna really have a fun time watching this movie! I absolutely love this film and I'll be uploading a SPOILER filled review tomorrow. For now though I'm giving CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLIDER an A+!
