After 'The Walking Dead' season 4 went out with a slammed shut door and a tantalising send off from hero Rick Grimes, fans are left with only a rough October release date to keep them from eating off their own arms. Series creator Robert Kirkman has fortunately been talking to MTV about season five and the possibilities for what lies ahead in the world of 'The Walking Dead'.

Will Rick and co. escape their new confines? Are Beth, Tyreese, Carol and baby Judith still alive and preparing an assault to help Rick and the rest escape? Fortunately Kirkman is not revealing the answers to these questions but is giving away some details on the creative process and how far the show runners have got with season five.

Speaking to MTV, Kirkman announced that work is well and truly underway on writing the next season. He is confident that the show is going to continue to get better and better as it goes along and is still involved with writing the individual episodes as well as continuing the long running comics. He says:

'I just turned in the second episode script for season five, and all the writers are hard at work on their individual episodes. We're pretty much halfway through the fifth season, script-wise. And we've already nailed down what our finale is, and what our overall arc of the season is. The back half of the season is taking shape very quickly, and we'll have all the scripts written by the summer'.

Obviously the writers must keep ahead of the show as it airs on television and with season five expected to drop around October, filming is also due to start soon. Kirkman says:

'We'll be rolling cameras in May, so I'm very excited about that. We'll have another season of "Walking Dead" down. It's strange for me, being on the fifth season, because I feel like we just started.'

Many fans will agree as the show has gone from strength to strength over its four seasons so far. Expanding in length and breadth, the show had an interesting if shallow and frustrating first couple of seasons before getting really brilliant in seasons three and four.

Plenty More To Come

'The Walking Dead' has such a rich world that it is impossible to envisage it ever ending. The characters can change with death never far away and new characters always on the horizon but the world will never change. There is even a spin off series and more video games in the works and the comics are still continuing to grip readers. The future of the show is looking healthier than a withered old walker and Kirkman says:

'On some great shows, they run for five seasons and they're done. And it's like, "Wow, that show ran for a long time." I feel like we're still very much getting started, which is the feeling I've always had on the comics. So that's definitely a strange thing to realize, that five years have passed already.'

The future looks bright for 'Walking Dead' fans... expect plenty more of this show in the future!
