SPOILERS BELOW!

Something is going on in phase 2 of the Marvel cinematic universe, something grim and sinister. As of my count right now all three of the movies they’ve released under the phase 2 umbrella have ended on grim notes (to a certain degree). [Iron Man 3](movie:24391), Stark ridding himself of his armor (this is the least grim of the 3) but of course he’ll build more again (hopefully). Thor: The Dark World, Loki has taken over the throne of Asgard but is fooling everyone to think he is Odin. Lastly in [Captain America: The Winter Soldier](movie:254973), SHIELD has basically folded in on itself as Hydra has been infiltrating it from the beginning. The closing moments of these movies have been much different than all the solo films of phase 1.

Now lets bring [Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.](series:722469) into the fold. For the past few weeks AOS has been building up to something big and after the last episode End of the Beginning we got some idea what that might be. Then this past weekend Captain America: The Winter Soldier dropped in theaters and this big build revealed it’s ugly head; Hydra. A huge game changer and something for me at least that brought up a lot of questions after the final scene rolled for Cap.

Where does AOS go from here? Will SHIELD be rebuilt? Did we just find out who/what the Clairvoyant is? Do all these grim endings mean Avengers: Age of Ultron will be a rough journey for our heroes? Some of the questions I have I think I can answer, for others, pure guesses. Either way it can all be looked at as speculation. The Arnim Zola Equation A familiar “face” from Captain America: The First Avenger popped up in Winter Soldier, Dr. Arnim Zola. Only he was close to his comic form. When Captain America and Black Widow ran into Zola he brought up the Zola Equation. An equation that can predict where someone has been and where/what they are going to do. Basically a precognitive ability or clairvoyance.

The Arnim Zola Equation

Basically a precognitive ability or clairvoyance.

Now I have a theory floating out there about M.O.D.O.K. being the “Clairvoyant” on SHIELD and I don’t think us learning this could be the source behind the Clairvoyant changes much. Do I think M.O.D.O.K. is the Clairvoyant? Highly doubt it; would still love to see it but most likely not. Is Arnim Zola the Clairvoyant? Most likely not but he is for sure the one who gave this “Clairvoyant” their ability.

So now you’re thinking if not either of them then who? With the Arnim Zola Equation being the reason for this Clairvoyant I don’t think it is just one person but a few people within Hydra. With so many people who are a part of SHIELD actually being with Hydra it could be a number of them; Victoria Hand for one. It would be great if the main controller of this program is Baron von Strucker, but then of course he would not be defeated since he is a villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it would make for an interesting reveal. All I can say with Hydra having a plethora of villains to pull from it can be any one of them at this point.

What’s Next for S.H.I.E.L.D.?

With SHIELD practically dissolved before our eyes in Captain America 2 we are left wondering what happens now. With Fury walking off into the shadows there is no figure head in charge. Or is there? If you noticed in Cap at the end Maria Hill was shown at Stark Industries. What exactly would she be doing there? I’m sure Happy would appreciate the expertise for security detail but with her resume she is over qualified for that.

And that kids is how I saved the world...
And that kids is how I saved the world...

So if not that then what? Well as we also learned in Cap 2 Howard Stark was one of the founding fathers of SHIELD. Maybe she wants to talk to Tony about fixing SHIELDs internal issues, to right his fathers name and do good by him. Maybe it’s to start a whole other organization entirely like SWORD. I’m partially under the belief it’s to make the Avengers a permanent fixture, a team assembled under one roof (Avengers Mansion) willing to be the world’s body guard against the villainous bullies who plan to do humanity harm.

A Man Without a Home

We will be getting some answers in the next episode of AOS titled Turn, Turn, Turn along with a ton more questions. One of those questions is, where does Agent Coulson and his ragtag band of misfits go now? Coulson is already having trust issues with SHIELD and once all this Hydra nonsense is brought up to him he won’t be able to trust anyone anymore.

Early retirement?
Early retirement?

This is where SHIELD might take a very interesting turn. Coulson and his team may very well be on the run for awhile, Bruce Banner style. For me the only one who can clear the air for Coulson at this point would be Fury who is literally off the grid now. If Fury can restore Coulson’s faith in the system, maybe he can convince him to be the figurehead behind rebuilding SHIELD into a reputable agency.

We’re… We’re a Time-Bomb

All things point to chaos for Avengers: Age of Ultron. With SHIELD out of play and Hydra formulating schemes in the background our heroes will be mightily unprepared for what comes next. Yes, they came together to defeat Loki and the Chitauri in the Avengers but that scheme wasn’t that tall of an order. Now we have Hydra who is creating new weapons from tech left behind by the Chitauri not to mention they have Loki’s staff that most likely has the mind gem within it.

The other thing Hydra has going for them is all the years they where infiltrating SHIELD. They have all the files on the Avengers. If SHIELD documented their strengths and weaknesses Hydra knows them. Think of it like Batman’s contingency plan on the Justice League, he has detailed knowledge on how to take each one of them out if it were ever necessary. Now take this knowledge and install it into say a killer indestructible robot named Ultron and the Avengers are likely to have a very, very bad day.

Where's the laser?
Where's the laser?

Now am I saying Hydra will create Ultron? Most likely not. I think the US government will have a hand in that as they now fear the worst with SHIELD collapsing. However I can see Hydra getting a hold of one of these robots and enhancing it. Either way if Hydra creates or alters Ultron’s programming it would be more than likely he turns on them as well.
