It’s a rare delight to present the trailer for a fantastically cast, gorgeously shot western. Along gallops the trailer for The Homesman.
It’s an even bigger delight to present a western in which Tommy Lee Jones – arguably Hollywood’s curmodgeonliest curmudgeon since James Garner – plays a rapscallion of a westerner.
The movie obviously marks a labor of love for the actor, as he also wrote and directed it. The Homesman centers on said old coot who helps a pioneer woman Mary Bee Cuddy (Hilary Swank) escort three insane women from Nebraska to Iowa.

Tommy Lee Jones’ last directorial effort intended for the big screen (he made the Cormac McCarthy HBO movie The Sunset Limited in-between) was the moody western The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada which won the him the best actor and screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival. Expect The Homesman to try to repeat that trick!
Meryl Streep, James Spader, John Lithgow, Tim Blake Nelson, Hailee Steinfeld and Jesse Plemons co-star. You know a film is well-cast when Meryl Streep turns up for just one second in the trailer…
