The world's première film festival opens its illustrious gates this time next month and the news reel has duly started to tick away. We know that Australian Palme d'Or winner Jane Campion will be heading the jury, Iranian Palme d'Or winner Abbas Kiarostami will do the same for the shorts and Nicole Kidman's Grace of Monaco will open proceedings. The full programme will be announced this Thursday but today the festival has revealed it's official poster.

For the last few years the festival has chosen some form of cinematic royalty to look down over proceedings and this year it will be Marcello Mastroianni, smouldering devilishly over some shades, in Fellini's timeless 8 1/2. Feast your eyes below:

To paraphrase Homer Simpson: Mmm... Prestige-y

The programmers also had this to say:

We celebrate a cinema that is free and open to the world, acknowledging once again the artistic importance of Italian and European cinema through one of its most stellar figures.

How do you like it? Who do you think deserves the slot? Let us know below.

The Cannes film festival will run from the 14th - 25th of May.
