James Cameron has revealed he has some pretty revolutionary ideas for the sequel to his already revolutionary Avatar franchise. However, there is so much we don't know that true Avatar fans are dying to know what this genius has in store for us in not one, not two, but three new movies going into development back-to-back. However, what we know so far can help us find what could end up coming.
1) Avatar 2 & Avatar 3 are sequels, Avatar 4 is a prequel
When Avatar 4 was first announced to be in development alongside Avatar 2 and 3, James Cameron actually told us it would be a prequel to the first movie. However, with the knowledge that Neytiri and Jake Sully's actors have been reaffirmed for all three sequels, plans may have changed.
I haven't really put pen to paper on it, but basically it goes back to the early expeditions of Pandora, and kind of what went wrong with the humans and the Na'vi and what that was like to be an explorer and living in that world. We're dropping into a process that's 35 years in to a whole colonization. That will complete an arc and if that leads into more, we'll start, not imitating 'Star Wars,' but it's a logical thing to do because we'll have completed the thematic arc by the end of three. The only thing left to do is go back to see what it was like on those first expeditions and create some new characters that then become legacy characters in later films.
2) Avatar 2 & 3 will Introduce the Ocean Ecosystem of Pandora
We're doing 'Avatar' films now, so we're making up an ocean ecosystem for Pandora
James Cameron is an absolute genius. The beauty of the floating mountains of Pandora and the glowing night-time jungle ecosystem is a revolutionary idea. Now he prepares to revolutionize the magnificent coral reefs to include their own Pandoran flare. Think about the beautiful glowing jellyfish and bio-luminescent sea life we see in documentaries on Pandora.
With the jungle, the movie wasn't limited to transforming real animals into Pandoran creatures, even if there were monkeys, deer, dogs, horses, and lizards: he also introduced dragons. James Cameron could choose to introduce any kind of sea life he wants, including things like sea monsters, Atlantis, sea-horses that gallop along the ocean floor, underwater vegetable gardens, ANYTHING.
We also know James Cameron's scuba-diving inspired the marine ecosystem, but will not necessarily include the deepsea diving as much as the coral reefs. It's all the scuba diving I did before I even started the deep ocean stuff that has more of a direct connection to Avatar 2 & 3, which by the way won't take place completely in or under the water. That's just part of the environment of Pandora that we're going to see.
We know James Cameron has commissioned the creation of a submarine being able to explore uncharted depths in order to record footage for the films.
3) Avatar 2 & 3 are a Continuous Storyline
I'm writing two scripts together as one big thing.
Hopefully this doesn't mean the film series is following in the footsteps of Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3 and having a huge cliffhanger between the two, but the storylines will have a much bigger connection to each other than they will to the first movie.
4) The Movies will likely be shot in High Frame Rate
High frame rate is revolutionary, and has only been used on the major movie series: The Hobbit films. Movies are simply a series of pictures called frames that flash one after the next to trick the mind into believing it to be a moving sequence. This type of movie shows twice as many frames per second, giving super-high quality video.
We’re looking at high frame rate. I’m studying that. I haven’t made a final decision yet, whether the entire film will be made at a high frame rate or only parts of it. You know we’ll be shooting at a native resolution of probably 4K and so there should be a lot of true 4K theaters by then as well.
5) Colonel Quaritch and Dr. Augustine will Return
The actors playing both the main antagonist from the first film, the scar-faced Colonel Quaritch, and the deceased Dr. Augustine have been confirmed to be returning for the film. Fans speculate that Quaritch will return for revenge, while Augustine may return in flashbacks or as a memory in the Tree of Souls.
6) The Script is Almost Finished
Last week, Cameron said the film's script would be completely finished in 6 weeks, meaning we have 5 weeks left to go.
What We Want to Know
However, what we really want to know about the movies, Cameron hasn't disclosed to us. What do we want to know?
1) How will the film revolutionize Coral Reefs beyond the bio-luminescence of reefs that already exist in reality?
2) What kind of creatures will we see added to the planet of Pandora?
3) How will Quaritch and Augustine be reintroduced?
4) What kind of conflicts will Jake face now?
5) Are there any other humanoid species that exist on Pandora besides Na'vi? What other creatures will Cameron introduce?
