For years we have been teased constantly over the possibility of Marvel/Disney doing a Doctor Strange movie. But no other time have we fans been sure that the movie's on it's way than now. After Strange's name was dropped during CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, needless to say they had our attention. Well, the name's been dropped again. This time by Marvel Studios president and producer Kevin Feige.
"There’s a whole other side to the Marvel universe, which is the supernatural side. We’ve always been very interested in this aspect and this is going back to the early days of Strange Tales with Steve Ditko and Stan Lee. I love that stuff. We haven’t done anything that mind-trippy yet and for me, Doctor Strange is our doorway into that." He told Empire magazine.
Trippy doorway indeed. The supernatural has always been a factor of the Marvel Universe that has drawn many fans of the occult and macabre to the comics. The comic, Strange Tales (which strangely enough, shared space with S.H.I.E.L.D), was changed to DOCTOR STRANGE after issue #168 in 1968 (strange right?). The fact that Feige mentioning the old comic stregnthens my resolve that him and the Marvel/Disney brain trust are 'True Believers' in old school continuity. In that, they are proving that there is nothing wrong with reaching back to the early days and gleaning from the best era of comics ever!
That leaves the door open to a host of massive monsters and ghouls unleashed as far back as the mid-fifties. Other Characters like Baron Mordo, the Dread Dormammu, Brother Voodoo and (can you believe this) Adam Warlock. I bet there's a real possible link there with Guardians of the Galaxy and that cocoon the Collector is keeping safe...hmmm
Marvel has yet to officially announce a Doctor Strange movie, but it's thought the reveal could be coming this Summer at Comic-Con as part of their Phase 3 plans.
