Vampire Diaries executive producer Caroline Dries spoke at a screening last week about what fans should expect from season 5's finale and beyond. On last weeks episode she had this to say:

One of the best scenes [last week] was when Damon said, 'I don't want to look at you, I don't want to hear your voice and I definitely don't want to be your friend.

Dries has called next weeks episode a Cabin in the Woods style piece with Damon and Elena left in close proximity:

We purposefully threw them into a world together where they can't help but be literally on top of each other. They can't be away from each other. They can't be close to each other, We're trying to play into the drama of them now being in this weird purgatory in the relationship where it's like, how can we act when we can't escape each other?

Ian Somerhalder also spoke about what makes their relationship so fascinating:

It's always been that way with Elena. There's always this pushing and pulling, It really does make it a very dynamic component to their relationship that creates tension, chemistry. It's pretty evident and it's there to stay for a while. It's always uncomfortable. It's like someone running your hands on a chalkboard sometimes.

And went on to say:

Every time one of them is in the room with the other, it's like they don't have to say anything but their tension or chemistry exists, I think that's what makes them as a couple so powerful. Even if the storyline is them not dating, it's still a love story.

Dries went on to promise that next season:

This giant thing happens... Season six will be a lot of bringing people back together, and picking up the pieces.
