Universes collide in what could be one of the biggest sci-fi franchise crossovers in a long-time. Well, at least in Japan...

Japanese toy manufacturer, Takara Tomy, has announced they will be creating an official crossover of Transformers and Japanese anime Evangelion. The news was announced via an ad in Hobby Japan magazine which featured Optimus Prime repainted in the colors of Shinji's Unit-01 - a massive mecha designed to fight the invading monsters. Check that out below:

At the moment, it's expected the crossover will merely be a toy range - perhaps just repaintings of older Transformers toys, but Tomy have gone further by setting up an entire backstory. It goes like this:

The Angels are invading. Breaking a long silence, the mysterious life-forms known as the Angels suddenly appear. The weapons the UN forces gather together in retaliation can't even scratch them. In the end, they turn to the secret agency, NERV, to manage the anti-Angel strategy.
With Neo-Tokyo 3 in their sights, the Angels slowly advance upon the city...but suddenly a spaceship comes hurtling down from the sky above the Angels: the Sky Lynx! Out of the ship emerges warriors of the far-off planet Cybertron. They've come to investigate after noticing an unusual energy reading.
"We can't let a disaster like the Second Impact occur on this planet." "What?! What are these monsters?!"
The shocked Cybertron convoy sets its sights on an enemy much bigger than themselves.

If the toy range is successful, I can imagine the money-men will want to take it further, perhaps even developing a manga or anime series?
