Looks like Wonder Woman might have to wait a little while longer before getting that solo movie of hers!
With the commotion of an official Justice League movie to be directed by Batman vs. Superman's Zack Snyder, it was easy to overlook mentions of Shazam receiving the same treatment! But hidden just beneath the surface of superhero movie news, a section of the the Wall Street Journal article also revealed that:
Warner Bros. has several other movies in development unconnected to the Justice League that are based on DC superheroes and fantasy and crime titles from its Vertigo line of genre comics, said Mr. Silverman and Toby Emmerich, president of Warner’s New Line Cinema label. They include “Shazam,” “Metal Men,” “100 Bullets,” and “Fables.”
Does that mean that a Shazam movie is...back on?
Last we heard, the project was on hiatus. DC and WB were gearing up to develop several origin movies, including a Shazam movie, but those plans were never realized. Director Peter Segal explained that Superman's theater presence recently, in movies like Man of Steel and Batman vs. Superman, made a Shazam movie a long shot. He argued:
The thing is, Shazam has always lived this tortured life going against Superman. This dates back to the 1930s. Because Captain Marvel had similar powers to Superman, the DC folks back then sued what was the most popular comic book on the stands at that time. Years later, they bought it and it became a DC property but, as long as Superman stays hot in the market place, there seems like a little bit of a crossover between the two characters. After Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns,” it seemed like there was a moment in time where Shazam was going to see the light of day. That’s when you heard those stories. Now that Superman is being invigorated and going up against Batman, I think it’s difficult for DC to figure out how to launch this character in the wake of Superman’s resurgence.
Personally, I think Shazam could be the biggest movie of all the superhero movies, if done right. I would love to see him on the big screen I think it would work if they brought us an initial solo movie, where he goes up against Black Adam.
Speaking of which Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson revealed not so long ago that Black Adam is one of his favorite supervillains:
Talking in an interview with CinemaBlend, the bodybuilder turned actor also spoke about being in a Shazam movie, revealing that he "would have loved that, especially the idea of playing Black Adam." And as we all know, Dwayne has been flirting with DC for a while now... So watch this space.
If a Shazam movie is indeed back on, could it be The Rock's future superhero role? If so, will Johnson play Shazam himself or, as fans have long suspected, his nemesis Black Adam? Let me know what you guys think in the comment section below!
