Andrew Garfield is a pretty amazing actor in my opinion. The Social Network is one of my favorite movies and I was psyched out of my mind when I found out he was Spiderman. I love comic books and the original Spiderman movies are the reason why. Seeing Peter Parker, the superhero I grew up loving, read these things made me want to check them out. I did and I loved them. The Amazing Spiderman movie was not my favorite movie but none of it had anything to do with Garfield's performance.

With the Amazing Spiderman 2 coming out, Garfield has been sitting down for a lot of interviews. In a recent one, he was asked about the possibility of Miles Morales taking over the mantle. For those of you who don't know, there are two universes in the Marvel comics. These are the mainstream universe and the Ultimate Universe. In the Ultimate Universe, Peter Parker is killed in action. A few months later, a half black boy named Miles Morales is bitten by a spider engineered to replicate the response that the original spider had on Peter Parker. Miles, of course, had no part in this plan.

Garfield has been asked this question more than once. I have always had respect for Garfield but I have more now that I've watched some of these interviews. In the interviews, it was referenced that Garfield was not signed on for Amazing Spiderman 4. He responded by saying that he would be fine with seeing that. He then went on to talk about how the change of who was under the mask was big to fans and he thinks that the importance it has to fans grants them the right to do that.

I am completely on board with that. Although this could be teasing, I can't say that I would object to the idea. Granted, I am not a big fan of blending universes in the transition from comic to movie. This would be a bit more of a problem if the Amazing Spiderman movies didn't already do that...like, a lot. Peter Parker, in mainstream u, is a nerd who has trouble approaching people. In the Ultimate U and the new films, he is an loner. This doesn't mean he isn't harassed. His life has to suck. After all, he is Spiderman. The origin story is also a bit different, in some very small details that resemble those in the film. In the new film, Jamie Foxx plays Electro. Looking at him in the film and the Ultimate comics, they are quite a like. The only difference is that Foxx is blue and the original was yellow. The original Electro just looks...goofy.

If a Miles Morales movie does happen, I think that there is a lot of potential including the fact that it would introduce a new villain. Morales' uncle is Aaron Davis aka The Prowler. The Prowler is a thief who does other odd jobs. Davis easily figures out that Miles is Spiderman and eventually talks him into a few training sessions. This would be a really interesting relationship to put on film, after all, we have seen brothers, sisters, and fathers and sons. Rarely have we really gotten a glimpse into extended relatives finally finding these secrets out about each other.

One of the things that makes Morales and Parker different is the fact that Morales is not considered to be much of an outcast. This makes it easier to believe when we hear about his best friend and the fact that he has a girlfriend. After all, if Peter really was such an outcast, why all the girlfriends? Well, that's a topic for another day.

So, I'm actually interested to see how this goes down. Of course, the second film hasn't even come out yet, so there's still time. I'd love to see what you think in the comments below.
