A series of commercials from Carl’s Jr are getting a lot of attention, but not in a good way. With the upcoming release of X-Men Days of Future Past, Carl’s Jr has released a series of commercials involving several X-Men chowing down on their menu items. Now, these commercials were released a few weeks ago, but thanks to a recent article by Yahoo News, they are getting more negative attention. Just for fun, let’s take a look at each of these ads, shall we?
This advert stars Quicksilver. Note: for those of you who don’t know, both Disney and Fox own the rights to Quicksilver. Here, Quicksilver is eating an X-tra Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Biscuit. After taking one bite, a piece of bacon falls off the sandwich. Quicksilver then proceeds to use his super speed to wolf down the breakfast sandwich, even running over to a stage hand for some Minute-Maid orange juice. Wait a minute, so is the character filming a movie-within-the-movie or does Evan Peters himself have superpowers? And why would he eat the whole sandwich before eating the falling bacon slice? Couldn’t he just grab the slice of bacon and put it back on his sandwich? Why am I over-analyzing a burger joint commercial? I guess it's too late to back out now; there's still two more to look at. Prepare yourselves for more.
The next ad stars Mystique. Surprisingly, despite Jennifer Lawrence’s love for junk food, she does not play Mystique in this commercial. For some odd reason, Mystique decides that the best way to eat her Western X-Tra Bacon Thickburger is to turn into a guy. The phrase “Man up for 2x the bacon” then appears when she/he takes a bite. A lot of people may interpret this as Carl’s Jr. saying that women can’t eat this burger. Women's activists already got upset over Carl's Jr.'s Paris Hilton commercial, so they're sure to have another field day with this one.
Finally, let’s take a look at the commercial starring Colossus. Again, it’s an advert for the Western X-Tra Bacon Thickburger. First, Colossus takes a bite. Then he takes a piece of bacon off of the burger and stares at it. For some reason, seeing a strip of bacon is grounds for him to turn to metal and eat it. So, what exactly am I supposed to gather from this commercial? Does Carl’s Jr. overcook their bacon to a point where you need a metal jaw to chew it? Hmm… Okay, I’ve spent enough time nitpicking these ads.
Needless to say, these ads have gotten a slew of negative comments from X-Men fans. Many of these fans take issue with the disturbing, sexualized content of the commercials, and the arguably gross attempt at food porn. Comments include “Wow, talk about unappetizing,” “This is so embarrassing” and “If anyone’s still wondering why Marvel Studios is better than Fox, they need look no further than this commercial right here.” Ouch, looks like the fans have spoken.
Personally, I find these commercials to be well made, and I will give credit to the production crews for putting these together. However, I can see why they rub fans the wrong way, and they are sort of embarrassing to watch. I highly doubt that these characters would use their powers eat a burger, even if it is over 1,000 calories.
Now, famous characters shelling out for junk food is nothing new. Back in the 70's, Marvel Comics had its characters save the day with Hostess Fruit Pies. However, at least those ads fit the tone of the comics at the time. For a film marketing itself to be a darker X-Men film, these ads sort of make it hard to take the movie seriously. I still want to see the movie, and all joking aside, I'm not going to have a fit over these ads. Though I totally understand why the fans aren't happy with them.
