For years now, there has been speculation; there have been rumors. Folks have been trying to figure out IF Doctor Strange is happening any time soon. Though, that question has been answered in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (and by Marvel Studios insiders--he's definitely in the works).
That leaves just one more question to be answered: WHO will play the part of the former surgeon turned Sorcerer Supreme? Speculations have arisen from this question as well. Some fans think it will go to Liam Neeson or Mads Mikkelsen. Others think it will go to Viggo Mortensen, Jim Caviezel or Richard Armitage. Still others think it will fall to Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Hamm, Johnny Depp or Patrick Dempsey. Yet others even believe the role may be filled by the likes of Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, Jared Leto or Joseph Gordon-Levitt. And, in all honesty, the author of this article could see either one of those actors potentially in the part, for the special touch that each could bring to the role.
Though, for those of you who prefer any of those actors, you just may want to take a second look at some of the alternatives. In particular, you might want to wrap your mind around the thought of Luke Evans.
This and other photos were recently posted on Chris Evans' Facebook fan page 'Christopher Robert Evans'. It shows Chris Evans (Captain America) and Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye) getting nice and chummy with our boy Luke Evans at the Battersea Power Station Annual Party, over in London.
And it's not just a little one-off coincidence, where the guys just happen to meet up. They take pics three times, in two separate places. Not that this writer is any sort of paparazzi or publicity expert or anything, but it seems to make sense that, despite their secrecy, Marvel is just as intrigued by the fans' opinions as the fans are intrigued with Marvel's products.
Though, of course, Marvel knows better than to just give the announcement that 'BOOM! We have our guy!'. They want to let it sink in slowly with the Twitter followers and Facebook fans. This seems like a teeny-tiny mind-ninja Marvel Movie promo photo op. Perhaps they want to test and monitor reactions (ie whether folks actually make the connection between Luke and Doctor Strange).
And this, of course, is not to say that Evans (*ahem* Luke, not Chris) has been even conclusively cast in the role of Doctor Strange. He may be auditioning for the part, in talks, what have you. Marvel may be yet to even phone him about potentially taking on the role, for all we know.
Not to mention, among other pictures taken, the page also shows Chris Evans and Grace Jones in a pic together. That doesn't mean that Grace Jones will necessarily show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This writer understands and appreciates the possibility and likelihood of coincidences.
Still, on the other hand, this writer also knows that Marvel is very good at subtle and sneaky. Marvel Studios, from past experience, tends to be very good about keeping secrets until they want them leaked. And within movies and the show, there are plenty of messages and references that only the initiated would understand ('who or what is a Man-Thing?').
Bear in mind, Evans (*ahem* Luke, not Chris) has already been in the Clash of the Titans remake, Immortals and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. And he'll soon be in Dracula Untold and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. He obviously has no problem with the fantasy genre. So, don't be shocked if we soon see Luke Evans' name next to the role of the Sorcerer Supreme. Indeed, much Stranger things have happened...
