I saw The Amazing Spider-Man 2 earlier today and I thought it was much better than its predecessor. It may not be as gritty as The Dark Knight, or fun as The Avengers, but it is still definitely worth seeing. I'm going to go over some of the twists and turns that I didn't see coming and what it could mean for the next Spider-Man films to come.
Warning! Spoilers! Lots and lots of spoilers! If you haven't seen the movie and you don't want it ruined, hurry! click the red x on the top right of your screen! ... Still with me? Okay, let's go!
Stuff you won't find in the trailer...
It remains to be seen if he will be coming back, but by the looks of things he's dead. I have to admit it caught me of guard, because Electro was played by Jamie Foxx. It's a pretty big name to throw away after appearing in only one movie.
What it could mean for The Amazing Spider-Man 3: Electro is not a member of the sinister six and probably won't be back for the next film, and might not be back at all. So, sorry if you loved "Sparkles" In TASM 2. It looks like lights out.
Gwen Stacey dies:
Not really that shocking if you read the comics, have a twitter account, or just have internet in general. However, Emma Stone was a big name and its a big summer block buster so I thought they might wuss out. Kudos for sticking to it.
What it could mean for The Amazing Spider-Man 3: Mary Jane was originally supposed to be portrayed by Shailene Woodley in TASM 2, but they decided to cut her out because they couldn't find a good way to work in a love triangle with so much going on in the movie. With Gwen Stacey gone, we can expect for Mary Jane to be in the third installment. Whether or not she we will still be portrayed by Woodley is yet to be seen, but with the actress making the Divergent films its entirely possible they may have to find a new MJ.
Alistair Smythe makes a brief appearance:
When I heard the name my eyes widened. Smythe, played by B.J. Novak in TASM 2, is best known for creating the robot designed specifically to kill Spidey called the Spider Slayer! If they do have the Spider Slayer, I hope they go with a more sleek design (shown above) than the old school version.
What it could mean for The Amazing Spider-Man 3: Will we be seeing the Spider Slayer in TASM 3? Who knows. But the reveal of Smythe could mean that we will be seeing the monstrous robot in one of the future films.
Felicia aka Black Cat?:
Norman Osbourne's assistant's name is Felicia Hardy. Sound familiar? While Mary Jane may have Peter Parker's heart in the comics, his alter ego Spider-Man has a love interest of his own in the Black Cat.
What it could mean for The Amazing Spider-Man 3: I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the Black Cat made at the very least a small appearance in TASM 3.
Norman Osborn dies... Or does he?:
The last time we see Norman Osborn he is looks terminally ill in his bed as he talks to Harry. No funeral, no other mention of him. This is pure speculation on my part, but what if Norman Osborn isn't dead at all. What if he is actually still alive and ready to play a role in the Sinister Six?
What it could mean for The Amazing Spider-Man 3: If he is dead, then Harry has inherited all the assets to make Spider-Man's life a living hell. If he is alive, then maybe he will play a role in the Sinister Six. Who knows?
J. Jonah Jameson's name appears:
In TASM 2, Peter Parker is selling pictures of Spider-Man to the Daily Bugle via e-mail. The cantankerous J. Jonah Jameson, who is editor-in-chief of the newspaper, e-mails Peter back saying the pictures stink. Oh, and he clearly thinks Spider-Man is a criminal.
What it could mean for The Amazing Spider-Man 3: In the comics, Jameson is not a fan of Spider-Man and often makes his life, and Peter Parker's life as his employee, very difficult. Perhaps in the next movie they will step away from the whole "Peter's parents" back story and move forward with Peter's career as a photographer.
