It appears that Evangeline Lilly is indeed cast for Ant-Man, and reports have suggested she will be playing Scott Lang's love interest. With the casting of Paul Rudd as Scott Lang and the now aging Michael Douglas as Hank Pym, people have come up with the idea that Hank Pym's wife, the Wasp, would be too old to carry on the identity of a superhero.
However, as reports so far suggest major edits in the story of [Ant-Man](movie:9048) , such as Ultron no longer being a creation of Ant-Man as well as new villains being completely new and created specifically for the film adaptation, it seems the Ant-Man story may be getting some unique twists from the comics (though Feige has stated that Scott Lang's origin story will indeed remain the same).
Because of this, I feel that Janet van Dyne, the Wasp, will actually be Scott Lang's love interest rather than Hank Pym's. Yes, this means that Evangeline Lilly, if reports are accurate, would end up being the Wasp. In my eyes, she would be the absolute best choice for the Wasp! Why? I'll explain..
Evangeline Lily has an absolutely amazing and strong female personality: one with beautifully self-declared independence and strength. As the potential female superhero, Lilly would an amazing choice for the role. Not only that, but since October she has been rocking the shorter hairdo, something that is a signature style of Janet in the comics, as she said in an interview with Suntimes.
I just like short hair on women. I've always wanted to chop off my hair. When you’re on a TV show, they don’t allow you to cut your own hair. For the last eight years, I wanted to cut my hair, but I had the long, flowing locks.
She continued on to talk about how her change to her appearance has affected her own image of herself:
I got so sick of it that I just chopped it off and it was so amazing. I do feel free.
Evangeline Lilly also plays the defiant (defy-ANT, 'tis punny), heroic female elf in the Hobbit movies, who is willing to turn her back on her entire race to pursue a romance with a dwarf, as well as turn her back on Orlando Bloom... I mean Legolas. We know she can pull off the strength and power while still having the beauty of a female lead from her experience in this franchise.
Yes we've had Catwoman, and yes we've had Black Widow, but neither of them exhibited anything too supernatural. If Janet were to make it to the Ant-Man film, which starts filming THIS MONTH in my very own hometown of Atlanta, Georgia, she would be the first major female superhero.
Joss Whedon, writer and director of the [The Avengers: Age Of Ultron](movie:293035) almost had the Wasp in the film, but her parts were replaced by Black Widow instead. Such a valuable character would almost certainly be headed to the cinematic universe if she was really so close to being in one of the biggest box office hits in history.
