Upcoming Starz drama series Outlander - a heady mix of time travel, romance, action and Scotsmen in kilts adapted from the novel by Diana Gabaldon - is a tricky proposition in a post-Game of Thrones era.

The show is unlikely to have enough darkness to it to appeal to a traditional HBO audience, but is still on cable, so won't have any guaranteed access to the more conventional lead-ins that a similar show would enjoy on Network television, which without the presence of Maggie Smith can prove a problem.

Fortunately, it looks as though the show may have enough about it to beat those odds. A clunky voice-over aside, the newly released second trailer for the series suggests that underneath the bodice-ripping romantic action, there is a genuinely interesting time travel based premise. Better yet, the acting looks accomplished, and the combination of a beautiful setting and period details could yet prove to be a winner.
