Look, I know it's crazy to be speculating on ASM3 literally days after the wide release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but let's put the judgement aside for just a moment as we continue to process just what the heck Sony is planning to do with their underdog Marvel franchise.

We know there's a Sinister Six movie coming, and we know Venom will be hot off its heels (and even featuring Carnage). We even know (thanks to ASM2) what the Sinister Six lineup will basically consist of (Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Rhino, Vulture, Kraven the Hunter, Chameleon and Mysterio are the prime suspects).

But with so many spin-offs coming our way, we've pretty much forgotten that a villain will still need to go head-to-head with Spidey in The Amazing Spider-Man 3, so who will it be?

I'm not one for making needlessly bold predictions, but thanks to Marc Webb, I don't have to. The ASM/ASM2 director recently spoke out during an interview with Comicbook.com about who he really wants to place as Spidey's next great foe.

Kraven. I like the idea of Kraven. The Vulture. Ock. I always thought the idea of Mysterio was interesting. Maybe Scorpion. But really, Kraven I think is kind of interesting.

He's referring, of course, to Kraven the Hunter, one of the founding members of The Sinister Six. He's never been depicted on the big screen, but Kraven remains a decently recognizable villain within the Spider-Man lore.

In fact, Kraven plays a large role in the tie-in game for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which I've been playing pretty religiously over the last week (it's not that great, I'm sorry to say).

Keep in mind that the games are in no way canon, which you'll quickly find out if you play them (the first game featured Smythe, for example). But it's definitely possible that Webb is looking at how the game handled Kraven's story in regards to how it would play out onscreen.

(Mild spoilers for the game are below, but I don't think you'll be all that shocked. Don't read on if you seriously want to play the game without this mid-game reveal.)

In the game, Kraven is Spider-Man's mentor, teaching him hunting techniques that will help him track down the serial killer, Cletus Kassady (AKA Carnage) who is murdering criminals (including Uncle Ben's killer).

Later, it's revealed that Kraven has actually been helping Wilson Fisk (AKA Kingpin) all along, and he's only been grooming Spider-Man to become his greatest adversary. The execution of this intricate story is pretty terrible in the game, but it definitely has potential to position Kraven as a compelling villain, complete with a twist that will actually surprise anyone unfamiliar with the comics.

If you want to explore more of who Kraven is as a villain, you should read "Kraven's Last Hunt," which provides a lot of backstory for the character and would make a great fit for a movie tie-in.

But will Sony really want to go with Kraven as the main villain for ASM3? We can't be sure this early on, but I believe there are numerous ways to make Kraven a blockbuster villain, even without the Sinister Six helping him out.
