They've spawned 2 or more sequels, grossed extremely high in the box office and most of them have been remade, redone or digitally remastered. Here's my list of the top 10 horror movie franchises of all time!

10: Alien Franchise

Alien 3, 1992
Alien 3, 1992

Consisting of 4 films and 2 spin off movies, the Alien films are well known for being the best SciFi-Horror movies ever made. Okay, so they went downhill a bit after the second movie (Aliens) in 1986, but in total the 6 films made a HUGE $858,611,763 at the box office, so who are we to complain?

9: Scream Franchise

Scream, 1996
Scream, 1996

Consisting of 4 movies and a rumored 5th sequel, the Scream franchise brought something new to the slasher genre. It does get a bit cheesy at times, so I guess it's one of those things you either love or hate! The four films raked in an impressive $604,000,000 at the box office!

8: Child's Play Franchise

Child's Play, 1988

With a recent 6th installment to the franchise in 2013, Chucky has become a horror legend. With a seventh film in the works and a rumored remake (oh no!) the [Child's Play](movie:586482) franchise is a true classic! In total the 6 films received $182 Million at the box office.

7: Saw Franchise

Saw 3D, 2010
Saw 3D, 2010

In the 10 years since it's first release in 2004, the SAW franchise has managed to spawn 7 movies and there are even rumors about there being an 8th movie in the works. It scored a colossal $873,000,000 at the box office, and stands as one of the highest grossing horror movie franchises of all time!

6: Paranormal Activity Franchise

Paranormal Activity 2, 2010

Okay, here's another one that you will either love or hate. The Paranormal Activity franchise! Consisting of 5 movies, this series pulled in $807,043,208 at the box office with it's spooky real life haunting feel and imagery. Pretty impressive!

5: Hellraiser Franchise

A personal favourite of mine, the Hellraiser franchise raked in $48,526,609 with a total of 9 films. The first 3 were great, the 4th was watchable, 5th was awful, 6th almost watchable, 7th watchable, and every copy of the 8th and 9th movies need to be thrown into a volcano as far as I'm concerned! There have been talks about a dreaded remake for some time now, so we will just have to wait and see what happens with that.

4: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Franchise

Now this one has already been remade, but fortunately for us the original is being digitally remastered and we will see it back in cinemas some time this year! The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series consists of 7 films in total, with some better than others (but to be fair, that's the usually the case with sequels). This franchise made $235,000,000 in the box office!

3: Friday The 13th Franchise

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, 1988
Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, 1988

With a total of 12 movies Friday the 13th is one of the most well known movie franchises of all time. Earning $465,239,523 at the box office, and creating one of the most infamous horror characters of all time, the [Friday the 13th](movie:996554) movies will be enjoyed for a very long time. Remade in 2009, and with a "found footage" sequel to the remake in the works, the Jason Voorhees legacy lives on!

And who didn't love the overly 80's opening credits to part 3?

2: A Nightmare On Elm Street Franchise

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, 1987
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, 1987

Another favourite of mine, the Elm Street franchise is pure awesome! It consists of 6 original films, followed by Wes Craven's New Nightmare, Freddy vs Jason and then a rather bad remake in 2010. It's one of those must see movies, and horror fan or not, you'd be crazy not to love it! The franchise made a huge $457,000,000 at the box office.

Before I name my number 1 pick, here are a few honorable mentions!

Ouch, that looked like it hurt. The Final Destination Franchise.

George Romero's ' Dead ' Franchise

The Amityville Horror Franchise

Psycho Franchise

The Ring Franchise

The Evil Dead Franchise

Leprechaun Franchise

And finally,The Exorcist Franchise

1: Halloween Franchise

Halloween, 1978
Halloween, 1978

You guessed it! The Halloween franchise takes top spot on this list, for being the most original horror movies ever made. With a total of 10 films (2 remakes) and a " Halloween 3D " on the way, it is another one of those must see movies. Made on a shoestring budget, yet pulling in $367,000,000 over the course of 10 films, now that's a feat!
