Jonathan Demme hasn't made a narrative feature since Rachel Getting Married back in 2008 but that's all about to change in the coming year or so. He's got something called The Master Builder coming out later this year and now a Sony Picture Classics press release has hinted that he will follow that up with Ricki and the Flash in 2015, with none other than Meryl Steep taking the lead. It's described as being a:
funny and moving story of a rock n’ roll-loving woman who chased her dreams at the cost of her family, but now gets a chance to put things right.
The press pack goes on to announce that a new Robert Zemeckis film, titled To Reach the Clouds will be on its way too with Joseph Gordon Levitt and Ben Kingsley already on the cards. Swell.
More men have walked on the moon than have walked between the World Trade Center Towers, and no one ever will again. But with this immersive, photorealistic 3D film, which will also be in IMAX 3D, moviegoers will feel as if they have done so — an ultimate “big screen” experience. A fun, visual caper movie for all ages
How very Robert Zemeckis. How very Jonathan Demme.
Flight was Zemeckis' only live action film of the last 14 years and by the looks of things it will be remaining just that. This new film does sound spectacular though, a 3D re-imagining of Philippe Petit's trade centre tightrope walk? Sign us up.
Jonathan Demme is notorious for bagging awards gold for his leading players and with Ms. Oscar herself at the helm there's no reason to believe he won't do it again. It's also interesting to see that Diablo Cody will be penning the script but whatever the case, the soundtrack should rule and we've all got our fingers crossed that Meryl will be joining in on that too.
Ricki and the Flash is penned in for June 26th 2015 and To Reach the Clouds will follow on October 2nd.
Although, we won't be too surprised if Demme's is pushed back to an Awards season fall release.
