With the news that a planned blockbuster based off the original series of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers having been announced by both Lionsgate and Saban we know very little at this point in time. They only thing we know is that the film will be based on the original Mighty Morphin series and not any of the more recent series. So with that in mind I wonder if this may turn into more of a reimagined franchise much like seen with the reimagined series of Battlestar Galactica where we will have the same names and places but none of the same story and some things altered. For example in the original Battlestar, Starbuck was a male pilot where in the reimagined they gave him a gender change. Let's now take a look at how Power Rangers could do the same and make it a success while also making it stand apart from the original TV series.
The suits from the original were spandex and that is a pattern that has been consistent throughout the Power Rangers franchise, the only thing you know is you are always going to see a red, blue and yellow at least. With them admitting it will be based off the original series we can assume it will be red, yellow, blue, pink and black at least. They may include the Green Ranger but we will discuss that later.
They did attempt this style using a more armor looking suit for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie (just a side not that film made a total of $66,433,194 making it an official financial success) but these suits met with mixed reactions. However one side note is they did showcase these suits had extra features and weapons not seen in the series e.g. the yellow ranger could project light beams from her helmet, red could activate an inferred sight, blue had a kind of taser style weapon and pink had a whip. So they have already proven from the past they are willing to change from the spandex but I think they will think more carefully about the designs given they want to take the franchise to the next level. Below are some fanart redesigns I found that could work. Here are red and blue from 1 artist.
Here is 1 from another artist which is black, yellow and pink.
Also here is an image of the Red Ranger done in an Ironman style suit.
Just for a treat the first artist also did one for the Green Ranger and I found another by another artist.
Now officially the TV series started with Rita Repulsa leading her minions Goldar, Finster, Squat and Babboo. Goldar was her field general, Finster created her monsters leaving Squat and Babboo as comic relief mostly. Later Scorpina joined the crew joining Goldar as a field commander. However the roster changed once Lord Zedd entered in the second series with marked the end on the first part of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Later Rita and Zedd did join forces but worked solo during the era where the Power Rangers piloted the original zords the Dinozords. But in a reimagined series they could have it so they have Zedd and Rita as a combo trying to destroy the world as they are considered two of the best villains from the Power Rangers franchise. Another option is for Rita to be the villain in the first film and if they plan to do sequels have Lord Zedd arrive for that film.
I looked and managed to find a reimaged image of Rita and Goldar so we could see other possibilities but there was not much in the line of Lord Zedd to which I apologise, but then I guess there is only so much you can do with his initial design.
Another thing to note is in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers the Movie we met Ivan Ooze, who was an original villian created purely for the movie, which could also be another possibility.
They could also change how the Evil Green Ranger plays out in the Movie. In a reimagined series they could have the Evil Green Ranger active and after the other Rangers from the beginning. All they would have to do is have the story explain Rita chose her Evil Green Ranger before the Power Rangers received their powers. This would allow them to tell a new story using the same players and then plan to have him turn good either at the end of the film or save it for a sequel if the film meets with success.
Now this may sound strange to many but gender changes in Power Rangers is common. Power Rangers is based off of a franchise from Japan called Super Sentai, which has been in production 17 years longer than Power Rangers. Below is a picture of female Super Sentai.
Now you will notice all the suits have a skirt accompanying the outfit. Now below is a picture of the original Power Ranger again.
Did you notice the yellow ranger? If not you have now, and yes. The Yellow Ranger from the Super Sentai counterpart of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was male. This is not uncommon in Super Sentai, Pink is always female but Yellow, Blue, White, Silver, Red and Purple have been predominately male. So just like Battlestar Galactica they may decide to change the Yellow back to male making the Pink Ranger the only female member of the team. They could even choose to change the gender of another colour, but that is more unlikely than them just changing the Yellow.
The Command Centre
The base of operation is an important factor to any superhero, Batman has the cave, Superman the fortress, X-Men the mansion and Ironman has Stark Tower. The command centre saw a few changes over the years but up until Power Rangers Zeo remained pretty much the same.
They did take that design and made a more high-tech version in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie. I suspect for the new movie we will see something completely different. Given that people react well to bases either being like the batcave to being like Stark Tower they could go for a mix meeting high-tech with a scenery that fits with the motif of the dinosaurs. I guess we will just have to wait and see what they do. Also mentioning the Command Centre let us discuss Alpha 5.
He pretty much stayed the same throughout his run. They did upgrade him I guess is the best word as the series progressed but his basic design stayed the same. I wonder if they will keep Alpha 5 as a mini robot to run the command centre or if they will update him to be the command centre A.I system that assists the Rangers without the need of a physical body. Again time will tell, but I think it is like due to J.A.R.V.I.S from Ironman.
The Zords have typically been models or men in suits in Power Rangers, but given this is aiming to be a big blockbuster movie I think CGI is more likely. This has been done in the Power Rangers TV series (Super Sentai really as Power Rangers reuses their footage) and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie, but the TV series has a lower budget than a movie and the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie was made when CGI was first starting the be used in movies so does look CGI in the film. But with the increase in graphics technology and the ability of the artist, the right budget could see a Megazord done like in the Transformers movies. Below is an image of a style similar to the Transformer Movie franchise.
Another point of interest Saban approached Japan during their third series in hopes they would take their designs and make them some footage of Zords more in line with their original Zords rather than using the Ninja Zords they ended up having to use. Here are the designs for the original 5, the carrier Zord Titanus and they did plan to bring the Dragonzord back.
So it is clear years back Saban saw the Dinosaur theme worked and wanted to return to that theme. I highly doubt they will use these designs but they could be what inspires them for the new movie.
Also here is a fan made picture of the Dragonzord I found which does give an idea of how the classic look could look if done properly.
Now given that Power Rangers started 20 years ago I am sure a few had forgotten some of these details, but considering the amount of possibilities the film has it is either going to go one of two ways. One, it will be a huge success and start a franchise that will span for sequels and spur new live into the still going strong TV franchise. Two, it be a complete disaster and end the Power Rangers franchise all together. I just have this feeling there will be no grey area when it comes to its success. However what it does have going for it is a large fanbase that has 20 years worth of fans behind it and that alone may help it get at least one sequel even if the general population do not enjoy the film. It also has plenty of sources to pull from for ideas as Super Sentai has been going for over 37 years and has plenty of storylines they can look to for inspiration. As I have said already in this article only time will tell, but I for one am looking forward to hearing news of the films progression leading to trailer for us to make our final choice over seeing the movie.
