Could we be one step closer to seeing Chunk reprise his Truffle Shuffle? Following on from the massive news last month that a Goonies sequel is on its way, based on a story by Steven Spielberg, there is now even more reason to be optimistic about seeing our favorite childhood street gang on screen once more.
Sean Astin and Corey Feldman, appearing together on Huff Post Live, spoke out about the sequel - and though Astin initially feigned ignorance, he eventually revealed that preparations for a script are well under way:
"I happen to know that they are actively trying to secure a writer based on an outline that they feel really confident about...When Steven [Spielberg], who ultimately is the decision-maker on this, when he has felt the magic and he and [The Goonies director Richard Donner] are in agreement, which I believe will happen, then it will be a thing."
He also confirmed, after prompting from Feldman, that original screenwriter Chris Columbus will return in some capacity. When asked when the script would be ready, however, Astin was forced to admit: "I have no idea."
Will we be seeing him reprise his role as Mikey, though? As he puts it: "If they want me to be a part of it, i'm sure it'll work out."
Feldman and Astin both seem incredibly enthusiastic about the planned remake, and though it would certainly be nice to hear some details from figures more closely involved with the project - Mr Spielberg, if you're reading this, feel free to drop us a line - it's hard to imagine them not ending up in the sequel in some capacity. No matter what, it's an exciting time to be a Goonie!
What do you guys think? Will we see all the original cast return in the sequel? Let me know below!
