What's better for getting you in the Medieval mood than sitting down, watching Game of Thrones and glugging on a non-lager based beer? Well, HBO and Brewery Ommegang are once again teaming up to give you another Game of Thrones themed bottle of suds.
Ommegang and HBO have already produced three types of Game of Thrones beer and ales, and now they're adding a forth to the mix - Valar Morghulis. The beer, which is an Abbey Dubbel, will feature the "two-headed" coin given to Arya Stark by Jaqen H'ghar on the label. The type of beer and name, which means 'all men just die' in High Valyrian - Arya's mantra and the tagline of Season 4 - was chosen by Facebook fans from a range of candidates. Valar Morghulis won out over Seven Kingdoms (Tripel), Hand of the King (Quad) and Khal (Quad). I don't know about you, but I think the best name won. Check out a massive picture of the bottle below:
Bill Wetmore, Director of Marketing for Brewery Ommegang, had this to say:
The fan response to the beers has been so incredibly positive that we thought it would be a fun reward to ask them to play an active role in selecting the fourth beer. It’s not uncommon to hear ‘valar brewghulis’ spoken in the halls of the brewhouse, so we were secretly hoping that Valar Morghulis would be the winner. Our brewers are also excited to brew a Dubbel, a classic Belgian beer style, and have some great ideas to make this release extra special.
Valar Morghulis follows Iron Throne Blonde Ale, Take the Black Stout, and Fire and Blood Red Ale as the fourth Game of Thrones inspired booze. Each of the previous lines sold out within a matter of weeks, while stocks of Fire and Blood Red Ale, which was produced in much higher quantities, are also running dry. Josh Goodstadt, Vice President of HBO Global Licensing added:
The fan base for Game of Thrones keeps growing larger as each new season debuts, and the popularity of the beers is growing right along with the show. For this fourth beer, we found the perfect opportunity to give those diehard fans the power to choose what beer they wanted to drink, and we can’t wait to share this special brew with them this fall.
While Mike McManus, Ommegang Innovation Manager also threw in his two cents:
The Dubbel is one of the most recognized beer styles in Belgium and this is a very tasty version of that style. Valar Morghulis is a complex beer, much like the stories surrounding the phrase.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Belgian Dubbels, but I think for Game of Thrones I could make an exception. It would certainly be fun to join in the drunken revelry of Westeros.
You'll be able to get your hands on Valor Morghulis this fall.
What do you think? Have you had one of the Game of Thrones beers?
If you lived in Westeros, what would be your drink of choice?
