Dominion, the new Syfy angels vs. humans series based on 2010's Legion, has just debuted a brand new, and surprisingly original, poster.
The image, which Entertainment Weekly are dubbing "Michelangelo meets Tarantino", shows the cultural crossover that will be explored in the high-octane television series - namely that angels akin to the works of Milton and Dante will be clashing with plucky-little-dual-Beretta-wielding-John-McClane-look-a-likes. Check it out below:
Surprisingly, although this poster clearly apes the art of Renaissance painters, it is in fact a photograph. James Spence, senior VP of creative at Syfy had this to say about the poster:
I got the idea for the Dominion posters from thinking about how the show brings together something classical – angels – with something contemporary – Vegas. Much like Banksy when he subverted classical paintings. I thought it would be really compelling to subvert a classic image of an angel with a contemporary image of a gunfight (of which there are many in the show!). We worked with photographer Peter Lippmann to build up our image. Peter is a master of shooting images that look like they’ve been painted. The result is an image that at first glance appears like a renaissance image – the light, color and form of the image adheres to all the classic tropes – but on second glance it’s anything but.
[Dominion](series:1065855) tells the story of a rebellious young soldier (Christoper Egan) who finds out he is the unlikely savior of humanity when an army of bellicose lower angels decide to pop down to earth for a little bit of war.
It will premiere on Syfy on Thursday 9/8c June 19.
