Full disclosure: When I first heard about the Monster High dolls, I was enraged. How DARE Mattell tart up my favorite horror monsters and sell them to children! However, when I marched myself down to the big box toy store to check them out, I was in love. DAMMIT. Now, while I despise the fact that it takes toys like this to do it, I love the fact that Monster High introduces a younger generation to horror in the same inoffensive way that horror cartoons like Tales from the Cryptkeeper did for me. Granted, I didn't need to be baited into loving creepy things with cute makeup and pretty outfits, but I've always been a little weird.
So, while I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye on the developments surrounding Frankie Stein, Clawdeen Wolf, Draculaura, Cleo de Nile, Deuce Gorgon, Lagoona Blue, Ghoulia Yelps, Abbey Bominable, and Spectra Vondergeist, I'm hoping for a Mean Girls with blood, but I'm pretty sure that we're in for a mix of Addams Family and Hotel Transylvania - some campy cuteness, and weird but not off-puttingly weird. Accessible horror aimed at a young adult audience - and yes, it's likely going to be aimed specifically at girls.
I have faith in Universal, but with the writing being done by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (both of Gossip Girl and The O.C.), I'm reserving judgement for a little while at least.
