Another awesome moment at the Tulsa Comic Expo was the chance to meet Neil Kaplan who just so happened to be the voice of Optimus Prime in TRANSFORMERS: ROBOTS IN DISGUISE!
And bigger than that, BDC and Project’s Playground got to interview Neil about his roles, not only as a Transformer, but also as a voice in the latest Starcraft game: Heart of the Swarm.
After Project’s introduction: “This is Steps from Project’s Playground and I’m here with Neil Kaplan; the voice of more things than I can possibly name. But more well known for Optimus Prime and Starcraft II…”
Neil is quick to correct… “Wait a second! Cause you said that and you made it sound like Optimus Prime was IN Starcraft II! So, I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up out there…”
He set the record straight very quickly that he voiced Tychus Findlay in both Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty and the upcoming Starcraft III: Heart of the Swarm. He went on to discuss why the lead designer of Starcraft, Chris Metzen, would love for that to happen! And who wouldn’t right? But, alas, it was not to be. No matter how a big a Transformer fan Metzen is.
And to see this shades of Neil Kaplan game to the finish, Metzen has worked on two online projects linked to one of Neil’s most famous voices. First, was a "digital-only" series turned Trade Paperback release, "Transformers: Autocracy" with author Flint Dille and artist Livio Ramondelli. The same team is current working on the follow-up series, "Transformers: Monstrosity".
Watch the rest of the interview to find out what voice Neil enjoyed the most in AND out of the sound booth. He also talks classic anti-heroes like Han Solo and his voice-sake, Tychus Findlay, getting into character and the love of even playing villains! He even digs into our childhood and brings a little Hawkmon back from Digimon!
Don’t forget to go let him know you saw the interview! At the end, he promised something special…
