As the final season of True Blood approaches, the most important question is this: when will we see everyone's favorite viking? I'm sure you remember the last time we saw Eric Northman; he was sunbathing nude, reading a book and enjoying his new found sunwalking abilities. It was all so lovely. Until he burst into flames.
Eric was first introduced to us as the cold hearted owner of Fangtasia. He had a bad attitude and a bad hairdo to match. After reading about Eric in the books, this long-haired jerk was kind of a disappointment for me, but then he got a proper haircut. This new haircut also seemed to usher in a new Eric; still seemingly cold and ruthless, but with a soft side hidden very, very deep.
Learning the story of his past and seeing his utter devotion and love for Godric really rounded him out and made him sympathetic. Of course, his love for Pam has always been touching and made him an easy character to invest in. Even when it comes to Bill, Eric always finds a way to get the people he loves out of harm's way. Everyone loves a hero, right?
It was in season three that we learned quite a bit about Eric's past and it is also the season that he really fell for Sookie. Both of these things just endeared him to viewers even more. Upon realizing that Russell Edgington is the man he has sought for over 1000 years, he does the unthinkable and kills Russell's one true love, Talbot. Not quite finished with Russell yet, he hatches a plan to save Sookie from Russell that involves both men meeting the sun. Clearly, Mr. Northman isn't the callous, self involved man that he tries to make us think he is.
Of course, we can't forget Eric from season four. After the witches erased his memory, he was just a lovable little puppy dog that needed to be taken care of. Eric, minus his memory, was just too much adorable when it came to his inability to hide his love and affection for everyone's favorite waitress, Sookie. Even after he was restored to his former self, there was still a bit of that softness that stayed with him.
Seasons five and six brought us an Eric who would do almost anything to rescue his sister Nora, his progeny Pam, his true love Sookie, his frenemy Bill and anyone else that he could. No longer the same man we had met in the beginning, Eric had become so integral to the storyline and seemed so indispensable that it was almost comical when they tried to make us believe that he had met the sun. Please. As if our mighty Nordic warrior would be taken out in such a namby pampy way; and this brings me to the real point of this article (besides looking at pictures of Alexander Skarsgard). Eric is, indeed, returning to season seven of True Blood.
According to Brian Buckner, True Blood showrunner, Alexander Skarsgard will be returning as a series regular for the final season. Clearly, he won't be in tip top shape straight away, but he will be there. Buckner admits to knowing better than to rob viewers of Eric Northman visiting us in our living room every week.
