Nia Vardalos is writing a sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding, her rom-com that kicked ass at the world wide box office back when Kelly Clarkson was still semi-cool, in 2002.
Vardalos starred in My Big Fat Greek Wedding as a woman going through a mid-life crisis. Unmarried, she discovered a handsome schoolteacher who gave her hope and - after a stressful cross-cultural engagement - the movie wrapped with the happy couple's blissful wedding.
The writer and actor who picked up a best original screenplay Oscar nomination for her work on the 2002 flick has commented that the sequel will be "the next chapter of my family story", meaning that My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 will be an autobiographical account. Vardalos commented this week that:
Now that I'm experiencing motherhood I feel ready to write this next chapter... A few jaded press corps will claim I ran out of money or just want to kiss John Corbett again. One of these things is true.
I know which one that is - and I'll give you a massive clue: CARRIE BRADSHAW F*CKED UP, BIG TIME.
Anyway, Vardalos will reprise her role as a Greek-American who falls in love with a non-Greek and John Corbett (Sex and the City, Parenthood, Raising Helen) is back as the man who married her last time around, but the sequel is expected to centre on a new wedding.
D'you think My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 is just a cynical ploy to sell more Windex?
