This will be my 10th article to Moviepilot and I thought it’d be nice to celebrate it if I gave another straight forward article since my first (Will X-Men: Days of Future Past Live Up To The Hype?) was so well received. I would say go check it out but hey we all what the outcome of that movie is. Plus I have to indirectly address my latest Joker article. So please enjoy, let your mind loose for a lil bit and hear me out.
So why are superhero films so successful today?
It’s hard to say really. We live in a time now where superhero films are now “the thing”. We get more than at least 4 a year with each property; Marvel Studios, WB/DC, Sony, & Fox, are all trying to one up each other. Where there is rivalry, there is promise for better products, and where the competition gets high, the stakes get higher. I remember it was unheard of to be THAT much into superheroes and comics, unless you wanted to be called a nerd. Now, I can carry a superman lunch bag to work without really being laughed at, and I’m 28!
Now I never grew up with the comics. I honestly don’t think I EVER saw a comic book on sale or in a kid’s hands in Jamaica. So what I was exposed to were the cartoons, the action figures, and just whatever source material I could find as a kid. This was before windows 98 and when the internet was just coming around so hey, I didn’t have that many resources. However, the time then and the time now are completely different. The reason why these movies are so well received is because the target audience is SO huge. Sure you have your comedy, your action, your drama, but WHAT genre or film can you think of that will guarantee an attraction of both adults and kids? People in their late 20s and older can now relive their favorite superhero moments with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man, The X-men, Man of Steel, The Dark Knight, the list is expanding.
Who would have thought when the first X-Men film came out in 2000 it would be such a hit. What Byan Singer did was take the first step and with that, it birthed the Rise of The Age of Superhero Films. (See what I did there, ugh those titles are getting played out). The future of these films looks promising. With each passing year they get better and better.
Gone are the days of Steel (1997), year I’m looking at you Shaq. Today we live in an era where story telling have more depth, CGI looks magnificently realistic, we have top-notch actors that were almost born for their roles, and the history of our heroes coming alive with the help of amazing writers. Sure some are hit and miss but hey the studios are getting better.
I think Superhero movies are here to stay. Each property has its own plan all the way in the 2020s. We should all just sit back and appreciate the effort it goes into creating these films. Enough of this debate over the question of who is better, Marvel or DC? Because let’s face it, you will be catching ALL the latest films one way or the other, theater, Cable, or Netflix. These films are made for entertainment. They give you the opportunity to let go of reality and dream like you did when you were a kid. Carry your passion into promoting your favorite films so studios will have no choice but to make them better.
What am I saying? Blow up the comment section and tell me YOUR favorite superhero movie to date. Have fun with the debate but please be respectful to other readers' opinions. Mine WAS Iron Man but after seeing Captain America: The Winter Soldier, It has earned it’s number 1 spot on my list. What’s yours?
